Job Title: Scientist III, Organic Chemistry Manufacturing

The Organic Chemistry manufacturing department is responsible for delivering premier fluorescent probes and reagents that enable our customers to advance scientific discovery with cellular labeling and detection tools. Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated scientist with expertise in Organic Chemistry to join our manufacturing team in Eugene.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience in organic synthesis in a manufacturing or research laboratory with demonstrated proficiency in reaction optimization, troubleshooting, and experimental design skills to establish standard methodologies for methods and processes. The candidate must be capable of performing bench science activities, including development of self-directed work plans and synthesis procedures. This is a Senior position within the team and requires the ability to influence without direct authority by applying training, experience, and people/leadership skills to achieve safety, quality, delivery, and business goals.

A day in the Life:
- Work with the highest attention to personal and co-worker safety and follow all department policies and guidelines related to operation of process equipment, chemical handling, and waste disposal. Contribute experience and knowledge to lead improvements to the safety culture and policies within the team.
- Perform multi-step organic synthesis (100 mg to 500 g scale) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Apply technical ability to complete complex processes and procedures.
- Review historical manufacturing records, analyze and interpret scientific data to determine the specific processes required to successfully execute the current manufacturing work order. Identify opportunities to resolve processes issues to drive improvements in operational performance goals for Safety, Quality, Cost and Delivery.
- Follow the planned manufacturing schedule. Develop an individual weekly schedule and coordinate team resources to complete all assigned work on time with expected results.
- Participate in training and mentoring new and existing team members in standard lab practices, technical skills, troubleshooting, process improvements, safe laboratory practices, and hazardous materials handling and disposal. Offer technical guidance, mentoring, and direction to team members.
- Identify areas for chemistry process improvement in collaboration with senior team members to review proposed changes. Actively participate in leading implementation of approved process changes within quality system requirements.
- Participate in the transfer of new products from R&D to manufacturing through participation in cross-functional teams during development stage, driving initial manufacturing builds with a R&D partner, and providing clear feedback on the effectiveness and outcome of the new manufacturing processes.
- Complete all assigned tasks daily, which may require overtime and flexibility to work varying schedules including occasional weekends based on fluctuations in customer demand.
Keys to Success:
Education
- Master’s Degree in Organic Chemistry or related field with 5+ years of applicable experience required.
- PhD in Organic Chemistry (preferred) with 2+ years of applicable experience
- Applicable experience in organic synthesis may be from work in a manufacturing and/or academic research laboratory.
Experience, Skills, and Knowledge
- Extensive experience in organic synthesis, application of rigorous air and moisture free chemistry methods, advanced chromatography methods, and analytical methods to monitor and troubleshoot chemistry processes and determine product quality.
- Strong synthetic skills, demonstrated through experience in synthesis, isolation, and characterization of organic compounds.
- Experienced leader, capable of supporting and providing guidance to team members and demonstrating role model behaviors.
- Receptive to mentoring and feedback, with desire and motivation to continuously grow and develop both chemistry and leadership skills.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment
- The position requires full ambulatory skills and physical coordination sufficient to move about laboratory and office locations; the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch periodically for prolonged periods of time; and manipulate (lift, carry, move, push) glassware and equipment weighing up to 20-40 pounds inside a fume hood and around the lab.
