Staff Software Engineer – Service Resiliency

Position Summary

GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms, and applications.  You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.

Position Description

Our Staff Engineer works with our Distinguished Engineer and Sr. Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve, and enhance existing systems as well as identify new opportunities to apply your knowledge to solve critical problems. Our team thrives and succeeds in delivering high quality technology products and services in a hyper-growth environment where priorities shift quickly. The ideal candidate has broad and deep technical knowledge, typically ranging from front-end UIs through back-end systems and all points in between.

Position Responsibilities

As a Staff Engineer, you will:

  • Architect, design, and build scalable, resilient distributed applications and systems
  • Lead design sessions and code reviews with peers to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization
  • Design, and build process automation solutions and workflows to improve operational efficiency and system stability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including development, operations, and other SRE teams, to drive continuous improvement and ensure successful production deployments
  • Utilize hands-on experience with SharePoint, Azure DevOps and Microsoft power platform (Power Automate, Power Apps & Power BI) to develop and maintain customized solutions
  • Develop applications using Python, Java or other object-oriented languages, and use SQL or NoSQL databases, and Container Orchestration services like Kubernetes.
  • Mentor and provide guidance and support to junior engineers
  • Consistently share best practices and improve processes within and across teams

Qualifications

  • Expert level experience developing applications using OOP like Python, or Java, and experience with SQL or NoSQL Databases
  • Advanced understanding of monitoring and alerting concepts and tooling like Prometheus and Grafana
  • Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code
  • Advanced understanding of DevOps concepts including Azure DevOps framework and tools
  • In-depth knowledge of Computer data structures and algorithms
  • Experience with continuous delivery (CI/CD) tools like Microsoft ADO pipelines.
  • Experience building process automation solutions and workflows
  • Hands-on experience with at least one of Microsoft Power Automate, Power Apps & Power BI platforms
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
  • Relevant certifications, e.g., ITIL, AWS or Azure DevOps Engineer will be a plus

Experience

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of experience implementing with open-source frameworks
  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing applications
  • 3+ years of experience developing on AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience

Annual Salary

$90,000.00 - $230,000.00

The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
