JOB SUMMARY

May include but not limited to: pick non-ferrous metals from moving conveyor, cleans around mill, assists shredder mechanics in general maintenance, feed conveyors & other equipment, sort, stack and move materials throughout the yard. Prepares material for loading and unloading, general clean up of yard, cut larger pieces of scrap steel using cutting torch. Must have reliable transportation as there is no bus route to the work site.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To cut scrap steel to size using a cutting torch into quality control assigned sizes

  • Report any damages or issues to the supervisor

  • Keeps yard area clean, tidy and organized

  • Various lifting and manual labor tasks involved

  • To follow established safe work practices at all times, including wearing all personal protective equipment (PPE) or clothing

  • Maintain and clean equipment as needed and assist maintenance to keep production equipment operational and functional

  • Preform duties as needed with keeping the scrapyard operational

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Completion of High School and/or equivalent

  • No experience necessary but previous work experience in a manufacturing, production, or similar scrapyard/auto part environment will be considered an asset

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position including standing, walking, sitting, climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, moderate to heavy lifting and pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds throughout the day

  • Willing and able to work in variable weather conditions including hot, dry summer conditions and cold, harsh winter conditions

  • Willing and able to work in an environment subject to fluctuations in dust, odours, fumes, and noise

  • Willingness to learn and work responsibly

  • Strong communication skills – communicates clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and over radio devices

  • Strong work ethic – uses time efficiently, works safely, and ensure everyone around him/her is working safely

  • Responsible for handling, moving, and disposing of scrap material in safe manner

  • Strong attention to detail with close visual attention for sustained/long periods of time

  • Safety conscious and orientated

  • A proven history of reliability

  • Mentally alert to surroundings

  • Willing and able to work shift work
