Summary :

The Sterile Processing Technician performs and participates in decontaminating, cleaning, assembling, packaging, sterilizing, tracking, storing, and distributing reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established standards and procedures.

Job Description:

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Receives and processes instrumentation, supplies, and equipment from the operating room, hospital departments, clinics, and outside customers in a timely manner.

2. Ensures safety and quality of items processed via disassembly, inspection, and decontamination.

3. Performs assembly and packaging of instrumentation for sterilization.

4. Performs decontamination, sterilization, and high level disinfection of instrumentation and endoscopes based on specific instruction for use to ensure patient safety.

5. Performs and records required daily quality checks on the sterile processing environment, instrumentation, and equipment.

6. Follows standards for handling instrumentation and equipment including AAMI standards and manufacturers instruction for use.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED

• Sterile Processing Certification (preferably IAHCSMM) completion within one year of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of fifty (50) pounds without assistance

• Job classification is exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Frequent exposure to sharp objects and instruments

• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock

• Occasional high noise level in work environment

• Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents
