Position is an individual contributor who reports to the Associate Director of Medical Communications within the Japan Medical, which is part of Global Medical Affairs, and is responsible for the strategy and execution of market-level medical communication plans across BMS’ major therapeutic areas and assets/indications. The Manager of Medical Communications will ensure communications for non-promotional scientific exchange (publications and scientific medical content) related to the science and/or health economic value of BMS products and research data to inform healthcare providers (HCPs), patients, and payers in accordance with local regulations.
A core member of the Japan Medical, the Manager of Medical Communications is accountable for the following:
Medical Communications Strategy:
- Manage across the market and global matrix organization to drive quality planning and timely delivery of strategically aligned market medical communications plans within Japan, including scientific medical content
- Understand the communication needs across Japan and BMS’ major therapeutic areas that incorporate and align with enterprise-level strategies for the development and execution of functionally integrated scientific medical content and publication plans, with application and pull-through of the Scientific Communication Platforms and Scientific Narratives
- Lead and support as needed the development and execution of functionally integrated and aligned market-level medical communications plans to ensure timely, high-quality journal submissions, publications, congress presentations, and delivery of internal and external scientific medical content; adjust communications plans in accordance with clinical trial results/milestones and changes in the healthcare landscape and in alignment with global and market-level medical strategy
- Project strong business acumen and ability to interface with matrix partners to prioritize tactics within budget targets and work within allocated resources
Data Dissemination:
- Serve as a subject matter expert and provide support to cross-functional BMS internal audiences related to market-level scientific communication landscape, HCP preferences, publication and scientific medical content planning, data disclosure/dissemination, and represent BMS scientific communications to external investigators, key authors, and journal editors
- Demonstrate scientific/research expertise to support the establishment of strong working collaborations with both internal and external disease-area experts to ensure quality data analysis/interpretation, market-level communication planning, and data disclosure/dissemination
- Ensure clear, accurate, scientifically rigorous, and timely communication of scientific data, aligned with data dissemination and medical plans, to facilitate informed healthcare decision making
- Promote and reinforce principles among authors and internal publication stakeholder community, ensuring publications are authored, written, and reviewed according to publication best practices and BMS standards and policies and for ensuring BMS publication & scientific medical content standards are aligned with Good Publication Practices and industry standards, and all BMS employees engaged in publication activities follow Good Publication Practices guidance with the highest degree of integrity, quality and transparency
- Leverage, adapt, and facilitate translation of global scientific medical content; develop and update local market scientific medical content (standard response documents, reactive slides decks, slide loops, Q&As/FAQs) in alignment with clinical development program, publications, data presentations, congress activity, medical information inquiry trends, global communication platforms, product safety reports, and treatment landscape; ensure the review, adaptation, and approval of scientific medical content according to applicable local regulations
- Evaluate and interpret medical literature and write market-level medical information in various formats; provide guidance for addressing market-specific escalated medical information inquiries; deliver therapeutic area and product-related training to enable Medical Contact Center vendors to address unsolicited customer inquiries; maintain scientific medical content in the medical information systems
- Demonstrate understanding of legal, regulatory, and compliance frameworks applicable to pharmacovigilance issues as they pertain to medical information
- Work effectively as a member of a matrix team to meet customer needs related to clinical and health economics related outcomes by conducting medical surveillance of inquiries, communicating trends, and contributing to the identification and resolution of unmet medical need
Stakeholder Engagement:
- Serve as the Medical Communications, Japan point-of-contact between market Medical, global TA Medical Communications, and other matrix partners
- Enhance bidirectional communication with market Medical and global TA Medical Communications by understanding and sharing scientific communications plans to ensure awareness and connectivity
- Ensure endorsement of scientific communications plans by relevant governance bodies prior to execution
- Work effectively as a member of the matrix team to meet customer needs related to clinical and health economics-related outcomes by conducting medical surveillance of inquiries, communicating trends, and contributing to the identification and resolution of unmet medical need
- Partner with market Medical colleagues and other stakeholders to assess, plan, and allocate resources (budget, medical writing, biostatistical services) to ensure timely delivery of high-quality medical communications
- Partner externally with third-party vendors to ensure the appropriate balance of internal and external execution of work
- Liaise with alliance/collaboration partners appropriately as required for select assets/indications in the TA
- Enable and assist Medical Communications team with the collection and collation of clear market-specific metrics aligned to meeting customer needs and demonstrating desired outcomes and value of activities
- Function as a high performing partner, externally and internally, emphasizing teamwork, cooperation, personal accountability, and a commitment to quality; model BMS behaviors and reinforce such behaviors at all levels in the organization
- Participate in Medical Communications and Japan Medical workstreams
Qualifications & Experience
- Advanced scientific degree, eg, PharmD (or equivalent), PhD, or MD preferred
- 2 to 4 years of relevant work experience specifically related to clinical practice, pharmaceutical industry, managed care, or scientific communications agency
- Strong scientific knowledge of therapeutic and disease research areas and familiarity with drug development and product lifecycle
- Demonstrated track record of leading and executing in a highly matrixed environment working across multiple functional areas, global geographies, and markets
- Ability to manage multiple, complex, and competing priorities to deliver quality of work using strong leadership, organizational, communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
- Outstanding interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with exceptional time management skills
- Experience leading medical communications across all phases of drug development and commercialization
- Ability to analyze and interpret clinical trial data
- Ability to influence and negotiate appropriate solutions; ability to establish strong stakeholder relationships
- Ability to flexibly schedule and participate in teleconferences and virtual meetings across different time zones
- Ability to travel (domestically and internationally)
Knowledge Desired
- Pharmaceutical/Healthcare Industry
- External compliance, transparency and conflict-of-interest regulated work environments
- Knowledge of Good Publication Practices and guidance (GPP, ICMJE), Sunshine Act, Pharma Code of Conduct, and other guidance related to post-marketing practices and scientific data communication
- Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP), and ISMPP active member desired
- Knowledge of the field of medical information and medical communication, including the applicable legal, regulatory and compliance framework surrounding the communication of medical information and health economics information
- Understanding of clinical trial design and execution, statistical methods, and clinical trial data reporting requirements
- Familiarity with publication management tool (DataVision); knowledge of management information systems, databases, and digital application of information; knowledge of Microsoft suite of applications
