Leidos operates the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL), a US Department of Transportation (USDOT) onsite R&D lab located at the Turner Fairbank Highway Research Center. STOL’s focus is on improving transportation system operations to achieve USDOT’s safety, mobility, sustainability and equity goals. STOL spearheads a variety of exciting R&D projects involving emerging technologies, including but not limited to infrastructure and vehicle connectivity and automation, everything-in-the loop simulation, wireless communication, and experimental data collection and analysis.  To promote these efforts, Leidos is looking for a Junior/Mid Simulation Software Engineer – Cooperative Driving Applications (CDA) to join our team!

Primary Duties:

  • Assist in development of variety of applications and components in support of transportation research, including connected vehicles and human factors.
  • Design, develop, and test new features and enhancements for existing simulation platforms, primarily in C++ in a Linux environment.
  • Integration of new simulators into a co-simulation environment.
  • Deployment of simulations in cloud environments for scalable compute.
  • Resolution of bugs and anomalies reported by simulation users.
  • Tuning of simulation parameters and configuration for specific applications.

Additional Duties May Include:

  • Analyze and assess the team’s existing CDA software systems to comprehend their architecture, and how they can be redesigned into more modular, scalable, and maintainable components.
  • Contribute to internal best practices for software development and lead knowledge sharing to support adoption across development teams.
  • Work with cross-functional internal team to determine technical feasibility of projects, breakdown project goals into software development tasks, and assist with overall effort and timeline estimation of planned work.
  • Team up for the execution of planned technical work, including design work, addressing unplanned technical challenges, and being responsive to changes in customer needs.
  • Communicate across functions and convey findings accurately.
  • Additional Simulation duties as assigned.

  • Open-source simulation technologies like CARLA, SUMO, NS-3
  • Cloud computing architectures for cloud-based simulation
  • Human-factors focused driving simulator technologies
  • Integration of multiple simulators to form multi-resolution co-simulation platforms
  • Construction of digital-twin simulation environments for real-world spaces.
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems and Cooperative Driving Automation

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or other science discipline (e.g., transportation engineering, electrical engineering, etc.) with 2+ years’ industry experience developing software or a Masters with less than 2 years of experience.
  • Prior exposure with C++ and familiarity with scripting in Python or Bash in a Linux environment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance (which includes three years immediate residency in the US).
  • Interest in working with emerging technologies and shaping the future of transportation.
  • Working background with a distributed computing middleware (e.g. ROS, DDS, TENA, Kafka, etc.)
  • Prior involvemen with automated unit testing frameworks and best practices.
  • Technical writing skills to develop software documentation and support material.
  • Familiarity with peer review best practices for software changesets, both for submitting code changes as well as reviewing them.
  • Communication and collaboration skills to work with the STOL team as well as our on-site customer.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 4+ years’ industry experience developing software.
  • Project technical leadership, including planning and estimation of technical tasks.
  • Hands-on development experience with:
    • Vehicle dynamic and sensor simulation tools, such as CARLA, LGSVL, CARSIM, CARMaker or similar
    • Communication simulation tools like NS-3, OMNET++, NetSim, OPNET, Matlab or similar
    • Traffic simulation tools like SUMO, Vissim, Aimsun, TransModeler or similar
  • Developing software systems in an open-source environment
  • Working in an Agile development environment
  • Cloud computing development and configuration
  • Operation and development for driver-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, or motion platform simulators.
  • Experience with HD maps and tools (e.g., Roadrunner)
  • Experience with creating 3D maps for 3D simulators (Unreal Engine, CARLA)
  • Comprehension of communication protocols – TCP/UDP, SNMP
  • Knowledge of IP concepts, techniques, and common practices (e.g., working with sockets, internal vs external IP addressing, routing, etc)
  • Familiarity with publish/subscribe architecture patterns such as ROS and DDS
  • Familiarity with concepts of co-simulation or co-simulation frameworks (FMI/HLA/MOSAIC)
  • Knowledge of vehicle electronic systems and standards (SAE, ISO, etc.)
  • Experience with Git, Maven, Gradle, Docker and continuous integration
  • Software development for AR and VR technology
  • UML design language

Pay Range:

Pay Range $65,000.00 - $117,500.00
