Role Description

Zoetis, the world’s largest animal health company, is searching for a new member of their management team at their research site in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This is an entry-level manager position responsible for the scheduling, managing and coordination of veterinary technical support staff supporting pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and biological research at the Downtown Kalamazoo and Richland, Michigan sites. The manager is responsible for the management, leadership and development of a team of veterinary technicians who provide daily health assessments, collaborate with investigators on in vivo research projects, perform research studies, provide training, ensure compliance with regulations/guidelines and maintain appropriate documentation. This is a site-based position, and in-person attendance is required. The manager plays a leadership role in Veterinary Services reporting to the Attending Veterinarian.

  • Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:  Assuring the care for animals is provided in accordance with the regulations of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and accordance with the rules of accreditation for AAALAC International.  The position involves interactions with multiple positions and roles within the Veterinary Medicine Research and Development organization including researchers, site leaders, operations staff, facilities maintenance and engineering personnel, and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); writing and reviewing SOPs; hiring and training of staff; providing direct supervision and development of the technical staff; evaluating individual performance; providing performance management as needed; ensuring technical staff adheres to relevant policies and procedures and provides cross-functional support and communications to facilitate animal studies.  The manager will have an integral role in teaching, promoting, and maintaining strict biosecurity measures on the site. This manager will be responsible to lead the Kalamazoo and Richland Sites Controlled Substance Program, with the potential of other cross site teams. Travel between sites up to daily required. Some external travel may be required. Weekend/holiday coverage may be required on a rotating schedule. Coverage for daily technical activities may be required.

This role will be part of a management leadership team.  Cross training and support of other areas may be required depending on the needs of the operations.

Requirements:

Completion of a Veterinary Technician program through a 2- or 4-year program, (LVT) licensed to practice in at least one state with the ability to become licensed in Michigan within the first year.

Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as N95 respirators, ear/eye protection, etc.

Highly Desired Skills/Attributes:

Experience in ABSL-2 or above vivarium

Previous clinical experience (3-5 years) in a research setting as an LVT.

Previous supervisory or team lead experience.

Experience in training and mentoring veterinary technical staff.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Work environment:

May be required to work with zoonotic animal pathogens and chemicals. There may be handling

of zoonotic organisms and working in both ABSL-2 facilities requiring showering in/out procedures.
