BMO Capital Markets is seeking an Investment Banking Associate with an interest in real estate who will support the Real Estate Investment Banking team in Toronto.

Provides a combination of deep industry sector expertise, innovative thinking in a team-based approach and world class execution across a full suite of products to clients through an integrated Capital Markets platform. Collaborates to generate creative, client-focused solutions to prospective and current clients in the North American real estate sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support deal teams to develop and present pitch books for clients to secure mandates for new opportunities with respect to investment banking products and advisory services;

  • Integral to the execution of transactions with the ability to lead projects, delegate key workstreams and drive deliverables, while solving complex problems using various analytical techniques;

  • Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities in the real estate sector;

  • Write and prepare detailed confidential information memorandum and other marketing materials, when required;

  • Create complex financial models or perform other financial analysis to assist in the valuation of properties/portfolios or support strategic recommendations to clients;

  • Perform corporate-level financial modeling, various financial and strategic analyses, discounted cash flow analysis, comparable company analysis, precedent transaction analysis and evaluate other industry metrics, as required;

  • Build effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders;

  • Accountable for developing and mentoring Analysts/Interns by providing training, oversight, guidance and feedback; and

  • Ability to undertake broader work or accountabilities which may be assigned to support the larger North American Real Estate franchise (property brokerage, corporate banking, etc.), as needed

Education & Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree with a concentration in a related field, preferably in finance, economics, or accounting, with an outstanding academic achievement;

  • Demonstrates an interest in real estate and/or finance with a knowledge of capital markets and investment banking products preferred;

  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word), Bloomberg and Factset (or other sell-side data platforms);

  • Proficiency and experience using Argus Software is preferred, but not required;

  • Completion or current pursuit of a master’s degree or professional designation (CFA, CPA, AACI) would be an asset;

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain attention to detail with multiple or competing deadlines; and

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently, as required

Work Experience

  • 3+ years of full-time work experience in one or more of the following areas: investment banking, real estate investment, financial / valuation analysis or corporate finance; and

  • Demonstrates solid deal/transaction execution experience and/or management capabilities

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
