Essential Job functions
Lead Quality Data Strategic Plan
In collaboration with health system leaders, plan, lead and deliver the strategic and tactical roadmap of advanced quality data analytics and reporting in support of the organization’s patient quality and safety goals. Plan, direct and coordinate activities pertaining to developing, implementing and maintaining analytical solutions and support. Identify organizational data analytics/science needs and recommend solutions and process needs. Provide guidance and education to leadership on analytical tools, technology, and techniques. Maintain an environment of partnership by collaborating with analytics managers, project management leaders and application support teams to foster a team-based approach to high quality data solutions and deliverables. Stay abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of healthcare data analytics by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and actively participating in professional organizations. Integrate knowledge gained into current work practices.
Administer Data Platforms, Programs and Applications
Lead administration of multiple data platforms, formats, and applications utilized by the Quality & Safety Department to carry out analytics and reporting functions, including but not limited to Vizient, Premier, Epic, National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), Tableau, SharePoint, SPSS, SQL, Web Intelligence, and multiple national quality reporting programs. Facilitate the creation of reporting and data analytics from multiple data sources as well as the construction and maintenance of dashboards and dashboard elements for communicating performance in quality and safety metrics and initiatives to the organization, the Board, executive teams and management. Lead validation and revision of quality and safety dashboards and scorecards through trend and comparative analyses and environmental scans; collaborate with measure owners, stewards, executive team and data team to select appropriate measures, set benchmarked and meaningful targets. This job participates in the creation and delivery of high-quality analytics and machine learning offerings/solutions to meet the organization’s goals.
Lead Data Driven Insights
Support the organization’s strategic plan for highest patient quality and safety by providing data driven insights, analysis, and recommendations. Use data driven insights to streamline and improve clinical and business operations/performance, and to identify and initiate process improvement opportunities. Review, interpret and identify significant trends and opportunities for improvement in metrics and scorecards and communicate findings and recommendations to cross-functional teams, executives, and project leaders. Apply science of clinical benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement and best practices within and external to the organization. Provide feedback to health system leaders and stakeholders regarding metric selection, definition and methodology changes, data quality issues, and data submission issues for assigned databases, data sets and programs. Maintain working knowledge of metric specifications and requirements of evidence-based healthcare quality metrics sponsored by national organizations such as CMS, NAHQ, NCQA, TJC, AHQA, and CDC. Prepare and present quality program and metric performance updates for department, clinical and health system leaders. Understand key clinical and business processes and recommend analytical solutions to drive performance optimization. Ensure key performance indicators and operational metrics are collected and reviewed for meeting objectives. Identify resistance, performance gaps, and enact action plans for effectiveness. Serve as a Change Agent and a champion for change within your team and across VCUHS to help others deliver improvements that increase patient quality and safety.
Lead Highly Skilled Technology Professionals
Provide effective leadership of team of highly skilled technical professionals responsible for delivering data driven solutions to influence improvement in patient quality and safety throughout the institution. Communicate area’s strategic objectives to staff in order to maintain enterprise alignment and to streamline efforts. Staffs and retains talent in order to achieve strategic and operational goals. Ensure data team members maintain current knowledge of data infrastructure, sources and design. Ensure performance objectives are clearly set for all employees and mentors team to optimize performance, engagement, professional development and the quality of their work experience. Provide regular feedback (formal and informal) on competencies, performance and achievement against objectives. Ensure that all employee goals/evaluations are completed, communicated, and processed on a timely basis and provides coaching, discipline and discharge of team members when necessary. Partner with Human Resources to administer employee actions including hiring, performance reviews, promotions, disciplinary actions and all terminations. Create and maintain reference materials, procedures manuals, and data dictionaries for the department.
Operational/Customer Support
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver the right solutions to our customers. Understand customer needs and opportunities, facilitate customer understanding of data and data analytics and how it can be applied to drive decision making. Identify and drive new opportunities with analytical solutions to benefit user experience. Assure work product is developed, implemented, documented and supported to meet the needs of initiative goals. Manage customer expectation by providing timely communication of progress and issues. Create an environment of trust, high morale, and strong ongoing communication. Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the data analytic responsibilities. Develop effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seek advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
Fiscal Management
Collaborate with leaders to monitor rolling budget forecast. Manage and control team expenses and responsible for providing evidence of budget variances.
Demonstrate commitment to the mission of VCU Health and the department as evidenced by performing other duties as assigned and/or participating in special projects to support the mission of VCU Health and department. Aid team members and accept alternate assignments, as required.

Employment Qualifications
Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or related field from an accredited program or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, or related field from an accredited program. Related certifications preferred.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires minimum five (5) years relevant experience in clinical quality analytics/data science, analytic technology, and business intelligence, including advanced skills in SQL, Cognos, SAS, SPSS, Tableau and Power BI
Minimum three (3) years of leadership experience required
Programming experience in Python or R preferred
Prefer experience working with data solution platforms such as Vizient or Premier
Prefer experience working with Epic Electronic Health Record
Prefer working knowledge of evidence-based healthcare quality metrics sponsored by national organizations such as CMS, NAHQ, NCQA, TJC, AHQA, CDC
Prefer experience working in health care setting providing data analytics
