Job Title:

Job Summary:

Reviews and completes death paperwork, contacts funeral homes, assists pathology staff and residents with autopsies including evisceration of organs and removal of the brain and spinal cord. Releases deceased persons from the morgue and are responsible for cleaning instruments and the autopsy suite following autopsies. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Must have a High School diploma or GED.  Related experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Anatomy knowledge, manual dexterity, adaptability, and personal fortitude to work with deceased human bodies.  Effective communication, time management, and basic keyboarding skills are necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews death paperwork, contacts funeral homes and maintains records.
  • Prepares environment and patient for autopsy.
  • Eviscerates organs as directed when assisting with autopsies.  Obtains bone marrow specimens.  Removes brain and spinal cord.  Opens and washes the small and large bowels.
  • Cleans and sterilizes work area, autopsy area, and instruments after use. Drains formalin from specimen containers and disposes of biological waste.
  • Removes and photographs organs/specimens as directed when assisting with autopsies.
  • Cleans work area, autopsy area, and instruments after use.
  • Maintains and monitors equipment.
  • Drains formalin from specimen containers and disposes of biological waste.
  • Releases deceased patients from the morgue.
  • Audits supply inventory.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, frequent bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 75 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, frequent reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, frequent twisting, and frequent walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
