What is an Electric Operating Engineer (EOE)?
This Electric Operating Engineer (EOE) role is the local planning, load flow analysis, protection coordination and operations support at the District level on the distribution system. The EOE develops capital budget projects to address aging infrastructure, reliability and load concerns based on new customer interconnections, which include new business requests and Distributed Energy Resources (DER’s).
What does an Electric Operations Engineer do?
Circuit Modeling Studies and Improvements: performs modeling of the distribution system using engineering modeling software and performs circuit updates in our Outage Management System in preparation for Distribution Automation; reviews and updates circuit models when topology changes occur; assists with the transition to a fully electronic mapping system.
Planning: reviews new business service requests; performs engineering analysis for large loads and DER’s and determines the impact to the distribution system. Develops detailed recommendations for interconnection, including any system upgrades needed.
Capital Budget: development of capital budget projects for input into the Category 15 5-year budget plan.
Supports the Distribution Planning group’s development of area studies and new circuit integration.
Monitors peak loads on a circuit level, identifying thermal limitations, and develops plans for load shifting if necessary.
Manages the installation and programming of field devices (switched capacitors, regulators, reclosers, etc.)
Reliability: development of reliability reports; utilizes Microsoft Excel and IBM Cognos to analyze and identify reliability risks and propose recommendations for mitigation.
Distribution Automation: retrieval and analysis of information from electronic field devices. Performs postmortem fault analysis using relay oscillography.
Power Quality: monitors and analyzes data from recording meters to troubleshooting customer service issues. Supports contact voltage investigations.
Emergency Response: must be available during electric emergency events (e.g. storm restoration efforts) including outside of normal business hours.
What does it take to be an Electric Operations Engineer?
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering
Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
Well-developed written and verbal communication skills
Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind
Ability to multitask, juggle competing priorities, navigate complex situations, and consistently use good judgment.
Demonstrates a high level of intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm and promote a strong work ethic and positive customer service approach.
Must be willing to respond to all requests to work outside of normal business hours.
Must be able to travel as required (e.g., Albany, New York City, Washington DC, etc.).
Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
Master’s Degree
Professional Engineers License
Knowledge of industry technologies, operating practices, and distribution engineering theory
Knowledge of and/or experience in the electric and gas utility industry, particularly in the distribution space
