GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for assessing and managing the health and well-being of patients. Conducts extensive patient histories and examinations; orders medications, treatments, and laboratory tests; records progress notes and writes discharge summaries; and conducts rounds. May assist in operative procedures with supervising physician.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following duties and responsibilities are all essential job functions, as defined by the ADA, except those that begin with the word "May.")
1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served. This includes knowledge of the physical and psychological needs of patients served and the ability to respond appropriately to those needs.
2. Assesses and manages healthcare and physical well-being of patients under the direction of the Supervising Physician. Conducts extensive medical histories and patient examinations, deemed appropriate by the Supervising Physician and in keeping with the Physician Assistant's education, training and experience. Assists M.D. by conducting rounds, with the required documentation countersigned by the Supervising Physician as defined in this policy.
3. Reviews laboratory and diagnostic test results, evaluates condition of patient, and assists in the preparation of appropriate treatment plan as necessary. Reports evaluation to the Supervising Physician and collaborates with physician in difficult and/or complex patient situations.
4. Instructs patients and families in proper healthcare, appropriate illness prevention measures, and home care in accordance with patient's physical condition and the Supervising Physician's plan of treatment.
5. Ensures appropriate documentation of patient related information is included in the medical record. Dictates patient discharge summaries, progress notes, etc. as necessary, to be countersigned by the Supervising Physician as defined in this policy.
6. Responds to complex questions from patients and family members, directs same to sources of additional information, and allays fears and apprehensions when possible. Acts as a resource to staff.
7. Performs routine therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, dressing changes, suture removal.
8. May assist in operative procedures, in accordance with the Supervising Physician's clinical privileges and the Physician Assistant's education, training, and experience.
9. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature, attends related seminars, conferences and the like.
10. Shares equal call amongst the providers in the group as needed.
11. Performs other duties as required.

DEFINITIONS:
Physician Assistant as defined by the Physician Assistant Practice Act of 1987 with current licensure in Illinois and certified as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants or equivalent successor agency who performs procedures under the supervision of a physician.
Supervising Physician means the Physician who must be a member of the Medical Staff of Edward Hospital who: (1) within his/her specialty and expertise and within the Physician Assistant's approved privileges, may delegate a variety of tasks and procedures, and (2) in all circumstances, has the final responsibility for the care of the patient and the performance of the Physician Assistant. Supervision of the Physician Assistant shall not be construed to necessarily require the personal presence of the Supervising Physician at all times at the place where services are rendered, as long as there is communication available for consultation by radio or telecommunication, within established guidelines as determined by the physician/physician assistant team. No more than one Physician Assistant shall be supervised by a Supervising Physician. Each Supervising Physician of the Physician Assistant must file a notice of supervision of such Physician Assistant according to the rules of the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.
Alternate Supervising Physician means any Physician designated by the Supervising Physician to provide supervision in the event that he is unable to provide that supervision for period not to exceed 30 days unless the Department of Professional Regulations is notified in writing. The Alternate Supervising Physician shall maintain all the same responsibilities as the Supervising Physician.
Countersigning by the Supervising Physician means reviewing/acknowledging by note the Physician Assistant's orders and progress notes the day they are written, and in no instance to exceed 24 hours from the time they are written.
