Job Description Summary:

This position will be in Research Informatics (The Office of the Chief Research Informatics Officer) at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, USA. Research Informatics is committed to leveraging advanced data science methodologies on large-scale health data to push forward precision medicine.

The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) is seeking a talented and motivated Data Engineer to join our Research Informatics team to support cancer research. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining data pipelines and databases to support clinical and research data integration. This role requires strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, informatics, or a related field.

Work Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in data engineering, database management, or a related role, preferably in a healthcare or research setting.

  • Proficiency in SQL and database management systems (e.g., MySQL, MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL).

  • Experience with data integration tools and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes.

  • Familiarity with clinical data standards and healthcare databases (e.g., Epic, CIBMTR, REDCap, OMOP).

  • Knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R for data manipulation and analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

Work Experience: Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

Skills:

  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with researchers, clinicians, and IT teams to understand and document data requirements and provide technical support as needed.

  • Develop and maintain data pipelines to integrate clinical data from Epic, CIBMTR (Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research) data, REDCap, biospecimen and other databases.

  • Design, develop, and optimize databases to store integrated data from various sources. Ensure data integrity, security, and accessibility for research purposes. Maintain and update existing databases as needed.

  • Ensure accurate and timely linking of clinical data to specific timepoints.

  • Create high quality analytic datasets.

  • Support the analysis of integrated data to generate insights for research projects. Develop and maintain dashboards and reports to visualize key metrics and findings.

  • Building flowsheets or other structures in Epic

  • Collaborate with Cancer Center initiatives to enhance screening for Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).

  • Leverage Epic’s ability for remote monitoring

  • Communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.

  • Document data integration processes, database schemas, and data workflows.

  • Ensure compliance with data governance policies and regulatory requirements.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
