About Ethoca:
Mastercard is looking for a talented Lead Software Engineer to join the Mastercard`s Ethoca Alerts team in Pune. Ethoca Alerts connects merchants, acquirers and issuers together to share fraud and dispute data, enabling a faster dispute resolution process that reduces the need for chargebacks altogether. In this role you will be part of a highly agile team, building exiting and innovative products delivered at scale to global markets.



Role:

What’s it all about and what we expect you to do day to day
• Own and drive the resolution of complex technical problems spanning multiple services, platforms, and teams, ensuring alignment across stakeholders and delivering scalable solutions.
• Design, develop, and maintain high-quality, secure, and resilient Java-based applications and distributed systems using modern engineering practices.
• Provide technical leadership across the software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis and architecture design through implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.
• Lead the design and evolution of cloud-native solutions, leveraging modern cloud platforms and architectural patterns to improve scalability, resilience, performance, and operational efficiency.
• Define and enforce engineering standards, coding guidelines, architectural principles, and development best practices across the team.
• Conduct and promote thorough code reviews, automated quality checks, security scans, and performance validations to ensure production-ready software.
• Collaborate closely with Product, Architecture, Security, SRE, and Engineering teams to prioritise work, evaluate trade-offs, and deliver business value efficiently.
• Drive the adoption of modern software architecture patterns, including microservices, event-driven architectures, domain-driven design, API-first development, and cloud-native engineering practices.
• Continuously identify opportunities to modernise platforms, reduce technical debt, improve developer productivity, and enhance system reliability.
• Champion automation across the software delivery lifecycle, including CI/CD, infrastructure provisioning, testing, monitoring, and operational workflows.
• Lead by example through hands-on development, technical problem-solving, troubleshooting, and production support while maintaining a strong engineering mindset.
• Guide the team in designing highly available, fault-tolerant, observable, and secure systems that meet business and operational objectives.
• Facilitate architecture discussions, design reviews, technical proposals, and technical decision-making processes across teams.
• Drive operational excellence by promoting observability, proactive monitoring, incident management, and blameless postmortem practices.
• Mentor, coach, and develop engineers at various levels by providing technical guidance, constructive feedback, career development support, and growth opportunities.
• Foster a culture of engineering excellence, innovation, continuous learning, accountability, and collaboration.
• Advocate for engineering best practices, emerging technologies, cloud adoption, and architectural improvements across the broader organisation.
• Build strong relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to successfully deliver strategic initiatives.
• Participate in hiring activities, conduct technical interviews, and contribute to building high-performing engineering teams.
• Support talent development through technical leadership, succession planning, performance coaching, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
• Successfully lead and contribute to large-scale, globally distributed, cross-functional projects and transformation initiatives.

All About You and What you need to bring:

• 8–12+ years of software engineering experience with strong expertise in Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, and distributed systems.
• Proven experience designing and delivering cloud-native solutions on Azure, AWS, or GCP using microservices, event-driven architectures, and modern integration patterns.
• Strong understanding and practical application of SOLID principles, Clean Architecture, Domain-Driven Design (DDD), and enterprise architectural patterns including Microservices, Event-Driven Architecture, API Gateway, CQRS, Saga, Dependency Injection, Circuit Breaker, and Strangler Pattern to build scalable, resilient, and maintainable systems.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift, CI/CD, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Bicep, ARM, CloudFormation), and DevOps practices.
• Deep knowledge of secure software development, including OWASP, authentication, authorisation, vulnerability management, and data protection principles.
• Strong advocate for engineering excellence through code reviews, automated testing, SonarQube, security scanning, observability, and continuous improvement.
• Experience implementing TDD, BDD, unit, integration, contract, and performance testing using modern testing frameworks and tools.
• Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues using logs, monitoring, profiling, heap dumps, and thread dumps.
• Experience designing and delivering solutions that meet performance, scalability, reliability, availability, and operational resilience requirements.
• Proven ability to lead technical discussions, drive architecture decisions, influence engineering strategy, and deliver results across multiple teams.
• Strong mentoring and coaching skills with a passion for developing engineers, raising the engineering bar, and building high-performing teams.
• Excellent stakeholder management, communication, and collaboration skills with experience working in large-scale, cross-functional, and globally distributed organisations.
