Lead and manage a team of Claims Examiners and Claims Support staff, ensuring efficient and fair processing of claims in line with the Markel claims philosophy.
About the team:
The Markel claims department seeks to be market-leading in the provision of efficient, cost-effective and professional claims service to our customers and brokers. Our vision is to be the most customer-centric, agile and value-adding claims team in the market. We strive to be pro-active and flexible in the management of claims while maintaining our integrity. The claims team works collaboratively alongside the underwriting function in order to facilitate close communication and exchange of ideas, and is an integral part of the product and customer service delivered to our clients.
The team is currently comprised of 6 Claims Examiners and 1 support staff all reporting into the Toronto office. We utilize independent adjusters for investigations and currently utilize Third Party Administrators (TPAs) for our claim payment administration. The team manages claims across all of our product lines (Casualty, Property, E&O, D&O, Environmental, Excess & Umbrella and Cyber.
What we ask of you:
- Lead and manage your team in order to drive the claims towards resolution in line with the Markel Claims Philosophy.
- Establish and review your team's objectives and dealing with any performance issues promptly and fairly.
- Provide oversight of delegated claims arrangements and support the review and onboarding of any new delegated arrangements.
- Conduct effective 1:1s and team meetings with staff with an aim of staying on top of claim trends and claims with significant development potential.
- Assist with the preparation of monthly and quarterly reports identifying key incurred movements and notifications, claims trends and current focus of the team.
- Handle special projects and initiatives as assigned in order to support the overall goals of the company.
- Drive efficiencies and high performance within the team, which includes reviewing team priorities, workloads, (future) team structure and processes regularly. Produce, comment upon and check reports are clear and correct regarding monthly KPIs.
- Drive team broker interaction to deliver a more customer-focused and value adding service; assist Business Development with key broker interactions and be able to speak to Markel’s claims philosophies and market differentiators.
- Forge great working relationships with all Markel departments including Underwriting, Actuarial, Finance, HR, Business Development as well as other International and Markel Specialty claims teams.
What you will bring to the role:
- Have proven leadership capability, or demonstrate the ability to lead a team.
- Be an experienced P&C claims practitioner with an understanding of our specialist areas (Environmental, E&O, D&O, Cyber and Excess & Umbrella)
- Have a proven ability to manage claim vendors to deliver high quality customer service.
- Have proven people management skills and demonstrate the ability to develop and train team members.
- Have strong computers skills, in particular working with data, Power BI, ability to manipulate data in Excel and strong data analytical skills.
- Have strong communication and presentation skills, comfortable presenting in front of small teams or company-wide town halls.
