Looking for an iSeries Administrator with 10+ years of experience for this fully remote position.

Role Overview: Lead and manage the internal hosted AS/400 (IBM iSeries) systems in St. Louis, MO, and Philadelphia, PA, overseeing a team of three engineers. Responsibilities include system configurations, upgrades, patching, performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and documentation of the AS/400 infrastructure.

Technical Expertise:

  • Extensive experience administering IBM I operating system, including backups, patching, security management, and performance tuning.

  • Proficient in IBM Power Systems (e.g., Power8, Power10) that host iSeries environments.

  • Expertise in SANs, IBM VTLs, and iSeries-specific storage solutions.

  • Skilled in BRMS (Backup, Recovery, and Media Services), tape libraries, and recovery solutions tailored to IBM i.

  • Implement security controls, manage user profiles, object authority, role-based access, and ensure compliance with industry standards like CIS hardening.

  • Optimize system performance using tools such as IBM iNavigator and Performance Data Investigator (PDI).

  • Knowledge of IBM PowerHA.

  • Strong understanding and skills in RPG programming to manage and modify application-level logic on IBM i.

  • Proficiency in CL scripting for automation of administrative tasks.

  • Understanding of TCP/IP, VPN, and other networking protocols for IBM i systems.

  • Experience with managing logical partitions (LPARs) and virtualization.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Be the primary technical lead role for the IBM I platform.

  • Configure, upgrade, and patch the AS/400 environment while ensuring optimal performance and reliability.

  • Maintain effective backup and replication strategies to ensure data integrity and availability, with regular integrity checks.

  • Analyze performance and resource utilization, addressing bottlenecks, and recommending system improvements.

  • Enforce security policies to protect the AS/400 from unauthorized access; monitor system logs, participate in security audits, and handle remediation from vulnerability assessments.

  • Work with application teams to integrate AS/400 systems with other technologies, and provide technical support for system-related issues.

  • Prepare and deliver reports on system performance, issues, and improvement plans to stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and understanding of business needs.

Additional Experience & Skills:

  • 5-10+ years working with IBM i/AS400 systems.

  • Relevant certifications such as IBM Certified Systems Administrator for Power Systems with IBM i.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders, and experience leading system upgrades and migrations.

This position will provide technical leadership for the entire infrastructure engineering team to build systems utilizing automation, resiliency, and flexibility. Define the strategy that drives the infrastructure and services that let product service teams quickly and safely iterate and experiment with features across many public and private deployments. Coach/lead the team to grow the capabilities of other engineers on the team as well as providing administrative support. Ensure technical currency is maintained within the infrastructure offerings. Be a hands-on engineer who can build resilient infrastructure both on premise or in the Cloud, assist with problem solving, root cause analysis, trouble shooting and coaching. Work with customer to define epics and refine requirements into actionable stories. Maintain financial plans for Capital and Operational expenses for projects and teams. Manage 24x7x365 days of staff coverage.
  • Sets team goals and prioritizes tasks to align with company and department objectives.  Communicates these goals to team members.  
  • Measures progress and results of team performance.
  • Ensures that all work is getting accomplished by making assignments and monitoring tasks. This includes balancing work between Database Administrators, Leads, and Supervisors, and ensuring proper policies and procedures are followed.
  • Manages all aspects of team staffing including hiring, employee retention, employee development and training.  
  • Assesses and evaluates individual capabilities using clear and consistent performance standards.  Provides feedback and coaching to staff both formally and informally.
  • Coordinates, guides and mentors project management efforts performed by staff to ensure all tasks are completed successfully and on time.
  • Assists staff in maintaining constant communication with customers, both internal and external, to facilitate analysis and troubleshooting to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Acts as liaison to assigned SBUs and management team to stay abreast of changing departmental needs.
  • Provides status reports to Management as appropriate, highlighting risks and issues.
  • Assists with budget preparation and management
  • Other duties as assigned.
