Staff Attorney
Office of Legal Affairs
Stateside, Regular, Exempt, Grade 3.3
Location: Hybrid (2-3 days a Week in Office, Adelphi, MD)
The Staff Attorney will provide legal advice to UMGC stakeholders (students, faculty, and staff), with a focus on collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, as supervised by both the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel. Success in this position will require the attorney to embrace and master new areas of law and professional challenges.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Assist with advice on a broad range of matters including, but not limited to, employment issues, student matters, external administrative complaints and contract review
- Advising on a broad range of contract matters related to a variety of areas/issues, including, but not limited to, technology agreements, strategic partnerships and alliances, leases, employment, faculty, grants, data privacy and security, intellectual property, and privacy laws
- Assisting with other matters involving areas of law such as FERPA, Title IV, TCPA, accessibility and accommodations, and marketing as needed to ensure University compliance with federal and state laws and regulations
- Perform continuous monitoring of compliance and contract issues and assist with university training in these areas
- Other duties as assigned
Required education and experience:
- Juris Doctorate, admission to the Maryland Bar or immediate eligibility for admission
- Three years of experience performing legal work
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong research, analytical, and project management skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent time management skills
- Experience advising clients on a variety of matters
- A willingness to support other attorneys; and demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Preferred experience:
- Experience working within a University legal department or in-house within a public/private organization legal department
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of higher education law, employment law, military, contract review, and compliance experience a plus

Hiring Range:
$95,000.00 - $105,000.00
