Lead the Enterprise Portfolio Management (EPM) function to ensure strategic alignment, prioritisation, and disciplined execution of initiatives across Astron Energy. This role is central to embedding the "One Astron Energy" operating model and serving as a strategic engine to facilitate the focused implementation and delivery of the Astron Energy Strategy. The function will drive enterprise value through integrated governance, standardised methodologies, and a culture of continuous improvement , ensuring that all enterprise initiatives are prioritised, optimally resourced, and executed efficiently to enhance overall commercial performance and strategic success.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Defining, communicating, and managing the enterprise portfolio to ensure it is aligned with the Astron Energy Strategy.

  • Establishing and managing the opportunity assessment funnel, from supporting business units with ideation through to screening, classification, evaluation, and final approval.

  • Facilitating informed, data-driven investment decisions by providing the necessary information to guide the selection and delivery of strategic initiatives.

  • Prioritising initiatives based on defined scoring methodologies and optimising the allocation of capital and operational resources across the portfolio.

  • Overseeing and tracking overall portfolio performance, value realisation, risks, and dependencies, reporting key insights to executive leadership.

  • Defining and managing the enterprise-wide process for integrated business planning, linking financial, operational, and strategic plans.

  • Driving collaboration across the PMO, Operational Excellence (OE), business units, and other functions to ensure seamless execution and stop siloed behaviour.

  • Embedding a culture of strategic delivery, accountability for results, and continuous improvement across the organisation.

Professional Qualification and Certifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field

  • Postgraduate qualification in Strategy, Portfolio Management, or MBA preferred

  • Certifications in Portfolio/Program Management (e.g., PfMP, PgMP, PMP)

Work Experience: 

  • 15+ years of experience in strategic planning, portfolio management, or a related field, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership role responsible for enterprise-wide strategy execution.

  • Demonstrable track record of establishing and leading a centralised Enterprise Portfolio Management (EPM), Strategic PMO, or Strategy Realisation Office within a complex, capital-intensive industry (e.g., energy, mining, manufacturing, or industrials).

  • Proven success in managing the full lifecycle of a large-scale, complex portfolio of business initiatives, from ideation and screening through to execution, benefit realisation, and strategic feedback.

  • Substantial experience facilitating executive-level decision-making (e.g., with an Executive Committee) to drive portfolio prioritisation, resource allocation, and investment approvals.

  • Direct experience leading and developing a multi-disciplinary team of portfolio, project, and operational excellence professionals.

  • Experience in driving organisational change and embedding a culture of execution discipline, accountability, and continuous improvement across federated business units.

  • Strategic and Commercial Acumen: Deep understanding of how to translate corporate strategy into an actionable portfolio of initiatives that drives enterprise value. Expertise in integrated business planning, linking strategic, financial, and operational plans.

  • Portfolio Governance and Investment Prioritisation: Expert knowledge of portfolio management frameworks, including the design and implementation of opportunity assessment funnels, prioritisation matrices, and stage-gate approval processes. Strong financial literacy, with proficiency in business case validation and benefits realisation management.

  • Execution Methodologies: Comprehensive knowledge of Project Management Office (PMO) functions, Operational Excellence (OE) principles, and standardised project delivery lifecycles.

  • Leadership and Stakeholder Influence: Exceptional ability to engage, influence, and align senior executives, business unit leaders, and functional heads to foster a collaborative, integrated "One Astron Energy" approach to execution. Proven capability to lead, coach, and mentor a high-performing team.

  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Strong analytical skills to oversee portfolio performance monitoring, interpret data to identify trends and risks, and provide actionable insights to leadership for timely intervention.

  • Change Management: In-depth understanding of the principles required to manage both the technical and people-related aspects of change, ensuring the successful adoption and sustainability of initiative outcomes.

Key Processes Supported:

This role supports the following critical Head Office processes:

  • The Head of EPM leads the Opportunity Assessment Funnel, ensuring all enterprise ideas are screened, classified, and routed appropriately to avoid duplication and misalignment.

  • They oversee the Portfolio Management Process, which prioritises initiatives, allocates resources, and tracks performance to ensure strategic alignment and value delivery.

  • They ensure compliance with the Project Management Lifecycle, supporting the PMO in applying standardised methodologies and governance frameworks across all enterprise projects.

  • They integrate and support the Operational Improvement Cycle, enabling continuous improvement efforts across business units and embedding OE practices into strategic delivery.

  • They are accountable for the Benefit Realisation Management process, ensuring that initiatives deliver the expected outcomes and that value is tracked and reported accurately.

  • They coordinate the Change Management Process, facilitating both technical and organisational change to ensure successful adoption and sustainability of initiative outcomes.

  • They manage Governance and Reporting, including preparation of portfolio dashboards and facilitation of Strategy ExCo and Investment Committee reviews.

  • They support Integrated Business Planning, linking strategic, financial, and operational plans to ensure cohesive execution across the enterprise.

  • They ensure alignment with the Enterprise Risk Management Framework, integrating initiative-level risks into broader enterprise risk oversight.
