Job Description Summary:

Responsible for aiding the professional nurse or physician in providing optimal care, addressing age-specific needs, in the clinic procedural room in a scrub capacity. The employee is responsible for providing patient care for an assigned shift as scheduled full time or part time. The employee is under the supervision of the clinic manager, and direct supervision of the physician.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Demonstrates through knowledge of principles of asepsis ensuring that proper techniques and practices are maintained, in providing age –specific patient care. Identifies needed supplies and prepares equipment, packs, and room for patient and procedure, addressing age specific patient care needs. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves self for procedures. Handles and passes instruments correctly and ensures their proper functionally and storage. Ensures proper handling of all lab and tissue specimens according to established protocol. Assumes responsibility for proper handling, sterilization, and stocking of supplies. Access to medications. Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste. Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision. Receives and transcribes the physician, FNP, PA orders as appropriate. Contributes to the development, implementation, and continuing evaluation of the patient care plan. Identifies, records, and reports any change in patient condition or adverse reaction to treatment and/or medication to the medical provider Documents care in patient’s record. Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel. Orders patient supplies and completes referrals for patients. Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Completion of a vocational school LPN program.
  • Prefer completion of a formal four-month interdepartmental orientation/training program designed to prepare LPN to function in role of surgical technology.    

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Current licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in the state of Tennessee.
  • Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.
  • Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.

EXPERIENCE:

  •   Minimum of 1 year work experience in health related field preferred but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Skill and proficiency in the technical field of practical nursing as normally acquired through completion of a vocational school LPN program.
  • Knowledge of hospital and department policies and procedures, surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment.

INTERPERSONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Interpersonal skills in frequent interaction with patients and personnel.
  • Communication skills with physicians during surgical procedures on a continuous basis.
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and the overall team effort of the department.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION REQUIREMENTS:

  • N/A

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to perform frequent moderate to heavy lifting with assistance (minimum of 50 pounds) and transporting of patients, supplies, and equipment.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking on a continuous basis of up to seven or more hours in an eight hour period.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

  • May be exposed to communicable diseases and bio-hazardous materials.
  • Frequent exposure to anesthesia gases, fumes, odors, biological, mechanical, electrical, chemical, x-ray, and laser hazards.
  • Routine exposure to latex products.
  • Routine occupational exposure.

  • Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
