What is an Energy Scheduler?
An Energy Scheduler supports all aspects of the electric and gas commodity Energy Buyer functions and works under their guidance and direction to plan, negotiate, evaluate, procure, and manage Central Hudson’s commodity portfolio of electric and natural gas supply, generation, transportation, storage, and hedge contracts. A Scheduler performs load forecasting and analysis of wholesale electric and natural gas market dynamics to procure short and long-term energy resources to meet load requirements and interfaces with the Energy Analysts to meet accounting requirements. This role is also responsible for supporting the implementation of regulatory obligations such as, and not limited to, Clean Energy Standard Load Serving Entity requirements and Energy Storage project evaluations.
What does an Energy Scheduler do?
Creates & issues electric and natural gas daily load forecasts
Documents commodity transactions to support Sarbanes Oxley and accounting requirements
Assists in the analysis, procurement, and scheduling of wholesale electric purchases in NYISO administered electric markets and gas term purchases in collaboration with gas Asset Manager
Assists in the development and management of the electric and natural gas commodity hedge portfolios to meet the projected daily electric and gas requirements, which include gas peaking and storage resources, futures contracts, contracts for differences, or other hedging instruments
Supports the Energy Buyers through maintaining real-time operating data in various energy management systems (e.g. IEA, MIS, NYGATS, GTS) and regulatory compliance documentation
Develops an understanding of the electric and natural gas utility industry and regulatory requirements of all agencies affecting electric and gas supply issues
Assists in the preparation of budgets and studies as they relate to the electric and gas functions
Collaborates with other departments within the Corporation and outside industry contacts to achieve compliance of federal, state and regulatory agency requirements
Supports storm/emergency restoration efforts
What does it take to be an Energy Scheduler?
Required:
Associate’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Accounting, or other analytical discipline. In lieu of an associate’s degree, a high school diploma or equivalent and 2+ years of equivalent work experience within the energy commodity field
Must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills
Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently with minimal supervision
Demonstrated implementation of creative and innovative solutions
Shows understanding and courtesy and ability to maintain effective company and industry relationships
Strong computer skills and ability to function seamlessly across multiple software systems
Strong analytical, information documentation, and organizational skills with attention to detail
Possess the ability to understand and implement source document requirements
Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Accounting, or other analytical discipline
Experience in energy policy, trading, and operations of wholesale electric & gas markets
Familiarity with New York or Northeast Region electric and natural gas wholesale markets
