Primary Operations has 3 areas of operations, Whiting Arc Furnace, Old Cast Shop and New Cast Shop. These areas are operated by a Combined Crew concept, which means your assignment to one of the pre mentioned areas may be temporary, and if business conditions require movement to another areas to either be trained in another area or help support that area to meet production requirements. Each area has its' level of physical workloads where safety awareness in proper lifting, bending, twisting is highly emphasized as all safety issues in a manufacturing setting where the environmental condition can be very hot and humid.

The “essential functions” of a position are those tasks that meet the definition of “the reason the position exists”. The job classification of “Combined Crew Furnace Operator” includes the following essential functions:

  • Operator checks heat numbers on run card with heat numbers on back of charge pan to make sure they are identical

  • Operator checks and hot cleans furnace or ladle

  • Add charge to furnace

  • Rub, rake, skim and tap furnace

  • Draw metal samples from furnace or ladle for analysis and calculate types and amounts of materials needed to ensure that materials meet specifications

  • Transfer molten metal from furnaces and place it into molds, or ladles

  • Remove impurities from the surface of molten metal using skimmers or rakes

  • Feeds material into furnaces maintain identity throughout entire operation

  • Observes instrumentation and operates controls to reach and maintain proper melting temperatures

  • Monitors metal pouring, temperature, ram speed and water flow to assure utmost yield

  • Must know the procedure for handling and disposing of solid and liquid waste

  • Learn and certify per Plant Policy to safety operate a forklift and other mobile equipment as it pertains to specific job tasks

  • Record data in various computer programs

  • Sorting ingots to order specifications

  • Mold prep and set up

  • Collector bag change and cleaning out pits and bays

  • Leather, nitrile, and cotton gloves

  • Aluminized coats and spats

  • Head gear

  • Cotton sleeve

  • Tyvek body suit

  • Encapsulated suit

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Must be able to pass a Physical Skills Assessment that is required to work in this position

  • Must be able to work independently without supervision

  • Must follow all environmental health and safety rules and regulations and must wear all required safety equipment

  • Must have concern for safety for themselves and co-workers

  • Must have a positive, team player attitude


 

The selection of the person to be hired for this position is contingent on the candidate having export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology which comes under the licensing jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of State, International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and the U.S. Department of Commerce, Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
