Position Summary

The Office of Institutional Effectiveness (IE) partners with academic leaders to deliver insights, guide strategy, and foster a data-informed culture that drives institutional excellence and continuous improvement. Established in 2022, IE serves as a strategic resource for WashU’s academic mission and priorities. Our work is grounded in our team values of people, excellence, impact and growth.

The Evaluation Manager leads and manages evaluation and assessment projects in collaboration with IE’s cross-functional team of data analysts, project coordinators, and data visualization designers. This position manages the full lifecycle of evaluation projects (i.e., planning, design, implementation, dissemination) to generate actionable insights and communicate meaningful stories with data.

This Evaluation Manager partners with closely with Provost Office leadership, schools, and other university partners to evaluate academic initiatives and strategies. The role involves designing and implementing mixed-method approaches, overseeing quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis, and translating findings into insights that inform decision-making and improvement.

This position also contributes to advancing IE’s evaluation strategy and supports WashU’s broader data governance effort by promoting practices that make data accessible, equitable, and understandable to decision-makers. In addition, the Evaluation Manager helps strengthen the evaluation capacity within the IE team through shared tools, training, and collaborative learning.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

Implementation and Project Management

  • Develop detailed workplans and oversee execution of deliverables across multiple concurrent projects.  

  • Lead key components of evaluation projects, in collaboration with project teams, including design and approach, tool and process development, data collection approach, dissemination, and engagement of interest holders.

  • Lead the design and implementation of qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, in collaboration with project team, ensuring alignment with WashU data governance standards.

  • Communicate project progress, risks, and insights to IE leadership and project interest holders on a regular basis.

Dissemination and Communication

  • Serve as dissemination lead on evaluation projects, overseeing translation and sharing of findings for various audiences.

  • Lead the development of a variety of dissemination products to enhance data informed decision making and impact.

  • Maintain high quality standards for project deliverables and interest holder engagement.

  • Implement data visualization and communication best practices in collaboration with IE’s visualization team.

Evaluation Design and Strategy

  • Develop responsive, high quality evaluation plans in collaboration with IE and initiative leadership.

  • Engage initiative leaders and other interest holders throughout the lifecycle of evaluation projects to ensure relevance, rigor, and usability of findings.

  • Advise interest holders on appropriate evaluation approaches and scope based on initiative goals, maturity, and context. 

  • Collaborate with IE leadership to develop and advance IE’s evaluation strategy.

  • Stay current on best practices in evaluation, higher education assessment, and strategic learning.

  • Build evaluation knowledge and capacity within the IE team through shared tools, templates, trainings, and consultation.

  • Experience developing evaluation scopes of work or proposals.
  • Experience conducting evaluation or assessment in higher education settings.
  • Experience providing evaluation training, consultation, and/or capacity building.
  • Ability to cultivate relationships and work effectively with diverse set of interest holders.
  • Ability to translate complex evaluation findings into clear insights and recommendations for decision-makers.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a complex organizational environment.

Salary Range

$65,900.00 - $112,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
