This role is individually responsible for the resolution of accounts placed into collections. The associate functions as primary contact for both internal and external customers. This role is responsible for maintaining customer satisfaction and goodwill by accurately, timely and professionally responding to customer requests, determining the appropriate actions and follow-up work required. This role will work across multiple divisions/departments and must have general knowledge in billing and collections, cash application and customer relations. In most cases, it is the company’s desire to ensure that the insured, agent/broker and other customers will want to continue to do business with Markel after going through the collections process.

Collaborates with underwriting, claims, and others to effectively handle external customers' disputes and other questions. Refers to Legal Collections management or subject matter experts in underwriting and claims when appropriate.

Communicates timely and effectively with all external/internal customers in order to ensure internal problems are identified and corrected quickly, accounts are assigned and billed promptly, superior customer service is provided, and collections are maximized.  Manages accounts in litigation in a timely and effective manner.
Initiates referrals to underwriting, management, collection agencies and collection attorneys for delinquent accounts in accordance with department standards; reviews account set up and verifies amount of proposed receivable for accuracy.
Maintains diaries and initiates billing, collections, correspondence, and follow up activities in order to meet current goals and metrics. Applies payments, verifies remittance and payment plan documentation in accordance with department standards.
Supports Operational Accounting and Reporting, Treasury and Disbursements in handling and reporting cash related transactions; assist Claim Associates and Claim Examiners to correctly establish deductible recoverables; provides backup and assistance to fellow associates when business needs dictate.
Works with Claim personnel to ensure that we receive the appropriate information to establish accurate billing and collection.  Works with Markel producers and sub-producers to ensure that premium was not collected through an agency prior to placement through the legal collection team.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

  • 0-1 years of direct experience in Collections is preferred
