Position Summary...

Drives the execution of multiple business plans and projects by identifying customer and operational needs; developing and communicating business plans and priorities; removing barriers and obstacles that impact performance; providing resources; identifying performance standards; measuring progress and adjusting performance accordingly; developing contingency plans; and demonstrating adaptability and supporting continuous learning. Provides supervision and development opportunities for associates by selecting and training; mentoring; assigning duties; building a team-based work environment; establishing performance expectations and conducting regular performance evaluations; providing recognition and rewards; coaching for success and improvement; and ensuring diversity awareness. Promotes and supports company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity by training and providing direction to others in their use and application; ensuring compliance with them; and utilizing and supporting the Open Door Policy. Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost-effectiveness; and participating in and supporting community outreach events.

This business closely partners with our U.S. stores and eCommerce business to serve customers by empowering associates, stores and merchants with technology innovation. rom grocery and entertainment to sporting goods and crafts, Walmart U.S. provides the deep assortment that our customers appreciate — whether they're shopping online at Walmart.com, through one of our mobile apps or shopping in a store. The focus areas include customer, stores and associates, in-store service, merchant tools, merchant data science and search & personalization. 

Our team is focused on leveraging latest research in generative AI, machine learning (ML), statistics, deep learning, computer vision and optimization to reshape how our customers interacts with our search and making it frictionless for them to get what they want. We operate at the intersection of huge Walmart assortment, millions of customers, thousands of stores, and Walmart associates - a multi-layer multi-objective problem space which has a unique impact on Global consumer base and powers assisted AI for our associates.

The team consists of data scientists, application engineers, big data geeks and product visionaries all working together to design, prototype and build technology-driven products and experiences that will change the future landscape of e-commerce. We are focused on building an intelligent system that will revolutionize customer experience, from finding the product to delivering it to the customer. We are building state-of-the-art machine learnt systems using cutting edge technology that has ability to A/B test in fast iterations, use GPU/CPU based online inferencing of deep learnt and traditional models and event driven architecture.  This will span multi markets, business models and form factors, therefore, we are looking for engineers and data scientists who will being not only an abundance of experiences in technologies but an abundant curiosity to innovate.

Also, the data science community at Walmart Labs is active in most of the Hack events, utilizing the petabytes of data at our disposal, to build some of the coolest ideas. All the work we do at Walmart Labs benefits our operations & our associates, helping Customers Save Money to Live Better.

What you'll do:

As a Staff Data Scientist for Walmart Labs, you’ll have the opportunity to

  • Apply and/or develop statistical modelling techniques (such as deep neural networks and Bayesian models), optimization methods and other ML techniques.
  • Develop efficient and scalable models at Walmart scale.
  • Collaborate with counterparts in business, engineering, and science to find impactful solutions to business problems.
  • Define and/or own the model goodness metrics and track the business impact over time.
  • Present recommendations from complex analysis to business partners in clear and actionable form, influencing the future.

What you'll bring:

  • Qualifications
    • PhD with >5 years of relevant experience / 4-year bachelor’s degree with > 10 years of experience / Master’s degree with > 8 years of experience. Educational qualifications should be preferably in Computer Science or a strongly quantitative discipline.
  • Manage the continuous improvement of data science and machine learning by following industry best practices and staying up to date with and extending the state-of-the-art in Machine Learning Research.
  • Integrate data science solutions into current business processes.
  • Develop and recommend process standards and best practices in Machine Learning as applicable to the retail industry.
  • Mentor peers and junior members and handle multiple projects at the same time.
  • Consult with business stakeholders across stores and e-commerce businesses regarding algorithm-based recommendations and be a thought-leader to develop these into business actions.
  • Engage and partner with universities, institutes, and vendor partners to bring in ideas and innovation into the lab’s environment.
  • Peer review and publish work in top tier ML/AI conferences such as NIPS, ICML, AAAI and COLT
  • Participate and speak at various external forums such as research conferences and technical summits.
  • Promote and support company policies, procedures, mission, values, and standards of ethics and integrity.

Good to haves:

  •  Recommender Systems experience, Deep learning as applied in computer vision, Experience with LLMs, Ecommerce domain.
