Position Summary
Manages the day-to-day operations of the IBC and is responsible for maintaining compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acids (NIH Guidelines). Provides direct supervision to three individuals (two Biosafety Compliance Specialists and one IBC Administrator). Provides biosafety expertise during laboratory construction, renovations, and relocations.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Manages the day-to-day operations of the IBC.
- Performs the initial risk assessment for IBC protocols, including human gene transfer protocols.
- Develops policies and procedures to maintain compliance with the NIH Guidelines.
- Supports the BSO in completing special projects as needed
- Serves as the subject matter expert for IBC-related software and other business tool development
- Participates in design meetings for new construction or renovation of laboratory facilities
- Acts as a liaison to faculty and staff as well as to representatives from many regulatory agencies (including CDC, USDA-APHIS, and NIH) to ensure compliance with regulations pertaining to biological safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in microbiology or related field, research laboratory experience and professional certification (CBSP, CSP, etc.).
- Biological safety or other professional credentials (RBP, CBSP).
- Able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Oral and written (business and technical) communication skills.
- Ability to make sound judgments that impact safety and compliance, public speaking and facility with Microsoft Office applications are essential skills.
Required Qualifications
Graduate degree in relevant field (microbiology, biochemistry, etc.) or four (4) years relevant experience.

Salary Range
$110,300.00 - $194,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
