Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to join our Remote Handling team. In this role, you will be immersed in a collaborative environment to contribute to the design, optimization, and iterative development of the Remote Handling System for Kairos Power's first low-power demonstration reactor, future commercial units, and related test systems. This position will allow you to make meaningful contributions within a multi-disciplinary team that is driving innovation in the field of advanced nuclear energy.

Responsibilities

  • Own pieces of innovative mechanical handling solutions for the full range of activities inside reactor system shielding cells
  • Work with commercial and custom end effectors, vision systems, tool changers, force resolution techniques, shielding systems, pilots, guides, and protections
  • Deliver test-proven hardware to large-scale engineering test and reactor systems through SolidWorks CAD design, drawing review and release, and work with internal fabrication teams to realize products
  • Collaborate with Engineering Teams to organize development to align at interfaces
  • Align to high level schedules tracking Hermes test reactor start up
  • Actively participate with Civil Structures Teams, Component Engineers, Reliability Engineers, Fabrication Teams, and Laboratory Staff to shape the shared solution
  • Publish engineering reports documenting design details and test results
  • Integrate design to cost and design for manufacturing efforts broadly across systems
  • Participate in and conduct inspections, quality checks, pre-commissioning checks and testing, installation, shakedown, tuning, hot commissioning, and other steps to verify performance
  • Keep pace with maturing reactor system design evolutions with aim to continuously improve
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with machine design and systems design
  • Experience fielding hardware
  • Proficiency in computer methods for data acquisition, control, and analysis.
  • Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with weldments
  • Experience with low voltage electrical systems, optical systems, and computer control of machines
  • Expertise with material selection and compatibility, preferred knowledge of radiation effects on materials
  • Familiarity with design and operation of pressure systems and fluid conveyance systems
  • Broad experience with power electronics such as servos, motors, electromagnets
  • Experience working with technical mentors
  • Ability to work with highly collaborative team
  • Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
  • Prioritizes and ensures safety of oneself and others
  • Ability to proactively collect, manage, and transfer knowledge

Physical Conditions 

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts, etc. 
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders)
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing, or sitting for prolonged periods
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 30 pounds in all directions
  • Communicating with others to exchange information
  • Use of various hand tools

Safety and PPE 

  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs

Travel 

  • 25% travel may be required
