Histotechnologist - Surgical Pathology - FT

Job Summary:

To process, embed, cut, and stain human tissue. Staining includes routine and special stains. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree and completion of an accredited clinical training program (candidates must graduate within 120 days and prior to hire) or bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in histopathology.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required:  none

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to properly orient, embed, and cut tissue using microtome and cryostat. Understanding of tissue processing. Verbal and written communication skills. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with team members. Computer and related software application skills. Ability to maintain accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Orients and embeds tissue in paraffin per standardized methods. Freezes, orients, embeds, and cuts fresh tissue.
  • Uses microtome and/or cryostat to perform microtome on tissue specimens to exacting measures of acceptability. Files cassettes.
  • Performs routine and special stains.
  • Labels and distributes slides to pathologists. Files slides.
  • Performs and documents equipment maintenance and quality control measures.
  • Ensures compliance with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.

    Physical and Environmental Demands
    Requires occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, frequent exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, occasional activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, frequent work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, frequent standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
