Markel Group has a unique opportunity for an experienced compliance-minded, team-first professional to join the Markel Ventures family. This individual will support our mission to “be the best home for our businesses” by coordinating SOX compliance efforts for our holding company.

As a small team, we have the privilege and the responsibility of serving the 20 unique companies in our family in their ‘forever’ journey – one that enables them to operate with a high degree of autonomy and an uncompromising commitment to the long-term. You will quickly have the opportunity to work with great businesses and great leaders as they achieve SOX readiness and maintain SOX compliance within their companies, supporting them in a manner consistent with the Markel Style.

This position assists with the coordination and execution of SOX compliance efforts for Markel Ventures and its affiliate companies.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ongoing design and execution of the Markel Ventures SOX compliance model as it relates to the Markel Ventures companies
  • Periodic evaluation of risk, taking into consideration the impact of any changes in identified risk at Markel Ventures or Markel Group to the existing compliance model
  • Close working relationship with other functional areas to resolve issues and achieve business goals
  • Coordination of the quarterly Management Representation Letter process
  • Coordination of and point of contact for third party auditors as it relates to the Markel Group audit and the standalone audits of the Markel Ventures companies
  • Assistance with acquisition due diligence, as requested
  • Continuous improvement of processes

Such activities require demonstrated experience in/with:

  • Current knowledge of the Sarbanes Oxley Act requirements
  • Recent experience with control framework implementations
  • High level of customer service, putting the needs of others first
  • Project management
  • Leading cross-functional teams

Experience, Education, Certifications:

  • 8-10 years experience as a SOX compliance professional whether as a consultant, in industry, or a combination of both
  •  Accounting or Finance degree
  • CPA or other applicable certification preferred
