As a Principal Engineer, you will act as a hands-on technical leader and architect for the Marketplace Orders and Returns platform. This role requires deep technical expertise and strong engineering judgment, with a focus on platform engineering to build scalable, resilient, and extensible systems across both backend and frontend layers.
You will drive architectural excellence, evaluate and adopt modern technologies, and solve complex problems across a distributed, high-scale environment while leading through influence across teams.
About the Team:
Marketplace Engineering team is at the forefront of building core platforms and services to enable Walmart to deliver vast selection at competitive prices and with best-in-class customer experience by enabling third-party sellers to the marketplace platform, sell and manage their products to our customers on walmart.com . We do this by managing the entire seller lifecycle, monitoring customer experience, and deliver high- value insights to our sellers to help them plan their assortment, price, inventory. The team also actively collaborates with partner platform teams to ensure we continue to deliver the best experience to our sellers and our customers.
What You’ll do:
Drive the technical vision and architecture for Marketplace Orders and Returns systems
Design and scale event-driven, microservices-based platforms, including APIs, webhooks, and app integrations, along with web front-end applications for Marketplace workflows
Lead end-to-end architecture across backend services and modern web front-end (React/Redux) to deliver seamless user experiences
Lead platform engineering initiatives to improve developer productivity, system scalability, and reusability across teams
Leverage data and AI-driven insights to enhance system intelligence, decision-making, and customer/seller experiences
Stay current with emerging technologies and apply modern engineering and platform practices to evolve the ecosystem
Lead cross-team architectural decisions to ensure scalability, reliability, and performance
Solve complex challenges in distributed systems, including data consistency, resiliency, and latency
Partner with Product and Engineering leaders to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions
Influence and align multiple teams across Marketplace, Payments, Fulfillment, and Seller Platform
Lead design reviews and establish engineering best practices for APIs, integrations, and front-end applications
Drive platform modernization and continuous improvement initiatives
Mentor senior engineers and raise the technical bar across the organization
Lead by example through hands-on technical contributions to critical systems and architectural initiatives
What you’ll bring:
Deep expertise in distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures
Strong experience building and scaling cloud-native platforms with high availability and performance
Proficiency in backend technologies (Java) and familiarity with modern web frameworks (React/Redux)
Experience designing and evolving APIs, webhooks, and external integrations at scale
Strong foundation in platform engineering and building reusable, extensible systems
Proven ability to drive architecture across teams and influence technical decisions at scale
Experience leveraging data and AI-driven insights to improve systems and user experiences
Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to navigate complex, ambiguous challenges
Track record of mentoring senior engineers and raising the overall technical bar
Excellent collaboration and communication skills across engineering and business stakeholders

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00
Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
