Surgical Charge Specialist - Perioperative Svcs
Job Summary:
This position ensures charges and coding of surgical procedures are accurate and completed for all surgical suite locations and procedural areas for Perioperative Services and other designated locations. Responsibilities for include assigning the correct charge codes(s) for billing and reimbursement. Completes charges and data for surgical cases into the EMR. Collaborates and communicates with perioperative services and other departments routinely to ensure complete, accurate, and timely charge/data entry and to obtain additional information when necessary. Auditing of implants and utilization for compliance and billing.
Education & Experience
Valid RN license and 5 years perioperative experience
OR
Certified Surgical Tech and 5 years perioperative experience.
OR
Valid LPN license with 5 years perioperative charge auditing/revenue cycle experience
OR
Associates or Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management/Technology
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Skills in Office software. Detail and quality oriented. Problem solving, organization and prioritization skills.
Responsibilities:
- Reviews all operative records for completeness within Perioperative Services, which includes reviewing records for applicable chargeable items.
- Reviews nursing documentation for missing elements/completeness. Notifies nurse manager of missing nursing documentation.
- Enters medical record implant documentation requirements including: implant type, size, manufacturer, cost, serial, lot number and model numbers as required for billing compliance. Supplies such as drill bits utilized and guidewires, as well as other non-implantable supplies utilized during the case all of which is required for cost reporting in the patient’s OR electronic medical record.
- Computes the pricing and chargeable supply costs to be translated into the patients billing codes.
- Creates requisitions for surgical implants and supplies.
- Compares vendor invoices (Bill Onlys) with documented items and validates payment or non-payment. Notifies purchasing agent of any irregularities noted in the standard usage or nursing documentation of usage of consignment items.
- Work with the revenue cycle department to generate new charge codes based on changes to Medicare billing rules.
- Assisting or responding to inquiries from various department for information regarding operative procedures, analysis of procedural cost and charges.
- Prepares and submits applicable reports as needed.
