Ivy Tech seeks a full-time Lab Asistant to provide laboratory support for natural science courses in the School of Arts, Sciences & Education (Anatomy & Physiology, Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics, and Physical Science). This is an in person role based on the Evansville campus.

Major Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving and desire to identify and support student success. 
  • Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued and supported. 
  • Go beyond the easiest or surface answer for a student, faculty, and an internal or external customer, and get to the root cause of the problem, question or issue to solve it as quickly and professionally as possible.
  • Provide laboratory support for natural science courses in School of Arts, Sciences & Education:
  • Maintain an orderly lab environment 
  • Maintain lab equipment and materials as needed for labs
  • Set up and take-down labs, maintain storage and clean-up in a timely manner
  • Check equipment and materials for proper operation, set up a preventative ma9intenance program on all lab equipmentPrepare materials and chemical solutions for use in lab experiments
  • Wash glassware and properly dispose of the following: 
    • used chemical reagents, biological specimens, any biohazardous waste, and broken glassware. 
  • Order, receive, and check equipment and supplies
  • Perform inventory checks and maintain inventory; perform minor repairs of laboratory equipment 
  • Work with science instructors to maintain levels of supplies and up-to-date inventory of supplies.
  • Maintain MSDS data sheets and follow OSHA guidelines for chemical storage. 
  • Coordinate/order supplies as needed through college ordering systems.
  • Maintain an ongoing, updated, inventory on all lab equipment, materials, supplies.
  • Other duties logically associated with the position may be assigned.  

Other Responsibilities:

  •  Provide and maintain a master list of all inventory specific to lab location.
  • Inform department head of any difficulty with suppliers.
  • Send in warranty cards and keep all users’ copy of warranty cards.
  • Work closely with Business Office on purchase orders received, back orders, and tagging of new equipment per campus policy.
  • Other duties logically associated with the position may be assigned. 

Hiring Range:

  • $19.00 - $22.00 per hour, based on experience

Location:

  • This is in-person position at the Ivy Tech Community College Evansville Campus.


Work Hours:  

  • Typical business work hours, may be adjusted during peak times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or Biotechnology
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook  
  • Must be dependable, punctual, organized, and dedicated.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or Biotechnology
  • OSHA and MSDS knowledge
  • One year experience with chemical and biological specimen use and disposal in a laboratory environment.
