Job Description:

Position Summary

This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and executing strategic merchandising for the assigned commodities, market segments, or product categories.  This position is accountable to profitability of the Eastern Rail Corn business unit, and will be located in either our Maumee, OH or Overland Park, KS office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, execute, and control merchandising programs and strategies for the assigned commodities, and achieves targeted volume, gross profit, and market share goals. 
  • Determine supply and demand, survey market conditions, evaluate arbitrage and hedge opportunities and analyzes other economic forces in domestic and foreign markets in order to develop a market point of view (POV). Establish a position in the marketplace based upon POV.
  • Initiate, negotiate and agree on terms of commodity/product purchase/sale contracts, such as price, quality, quantity, transportation, timing and payment. Ensure supply and procurement of assigned commodities within approved grades/commodity types. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key/strategic suppliers. Negotiate supply and purchasing agreements which support risk and profitability goals. 
  • Plan purchases and arrange efficient, low-cost transportation to maximize profitable use of stock and storage facilities.
  • Partner with sales/account reps, originations teams, merchandising teams, accounting/finance, and operations teams to ensure proper forecasting, risk management, and maintenance of stock levels required to meet customer demands and production needs while maximizing efficiency, service, and gross profit. 
  • Establish and ensure buy/sell processes and techniques meet internal company policy and procedures and comply with applicable laws and regulations. Manage commodity positions within approved risk parameters. 
  • Coach, mentor, lead, motivate, and develop a team of merchants to grow next-level talent within the Group.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred, preferably in Agriculture, Business, Finance Economics or related major
  • 7+ years’ relevant experience required in commodity merchandising, trading, and freight.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software

Physical Requirements and Working Environment

  • Prolonged period of sitting at a desk and working at a computer
