Our Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Transplant and Device Units, J54 and J55, feature 26 patient beds. Both J54 and J55 specialize in caring for patients requiring ventricular assist device (VAD) implantation or receiving a heart and/ or lung transplant. Our heart and lung transplant program regularly ranks in the top 10 in the nation in quality and volume. Cleveland Clinic VAD program is recognized as one of the most experienced in the US. These ratings are achieved year after year due to the dedicated nurses that support the programs in J54 and J55. J55 cares for the complex patient population requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). 

 

A caregiver in this position works nights, 7:00pm—3:30am. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.  

  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.  

  • Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly.  

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma/GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (upon or within new hire period) 

  • Nursing students required to have BLS prior to hire 

  • One year of recent, full-time patient care experience  

  • OR nursing student with at least one completed clinical rotation as part of an accredited Nursing School Program  

  • Military experience as a Hospital Corpsman (HM), Combat Medic (68W) or Medical Service Technician (4N0X1) OR additional education/training (e.g., mental health)

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full body motion to move and lift patients, manual finger dexterity with good eye-hand coordination; involves extensive standing and walking.

  • Medium Work - Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force rarely, and/or 0 to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects.

  • Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
