We are looking to hire a full-time Trademark Agent/Specialist to support the Loblaw Companies Limited (“LCL”) group of businesses (including Loblaw grocery banners, Shoppers Drug Mart, T&T Supermarket and Joe Fresh). You will provide expert guidance and practical business solutions to empower our various business groups to achieve their objectives with your key focus being trademark clearance and review of marketing materials from an IP perspective. In addition, you may be asked to assist with the prosecution and renewal of our company-wide trademark portfolio and act as a liaison between various business units and external counsel on these matters. The successful candidate will provide sound, practical advice, using strong judgment in a fast-paced business environment.

Loblaw has adopted a hybrid working model. For this position, you would be required to work a minimum of 3 days per week in the office.

Accountabilities:

  • Conduct trademark clearance searches and review marketing materials to provide assessment of the IP/trademark risks.
  • With support from external counsel and the other members of the IP team, assist with the management of LCL’s Canadian and international trademark portfolios.
  • Provide IP/trademark support on special projects and major marketing initiatives.
  • Be a trusted trademark advisor to the business by establishing relationships through collaboration and valuable expertise.
  • Develop and facilitate training sessions to the procurement group, marketing team, and other business groups functions as applicable.
  • Assist with managing and updating the IP team’s online resource library of self-serve tools for the business to leverage. This includes standardized legal templates, pre-approved copy, tips, guidelines, how to’s, regulations and more.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of annual team objectives.
  • Be an active participant within the Legal Department, including participation in committees of interest.
  • Personally demonstrate and foster within the IP team a culture of excellence that reflects Loblaw values.
     

Required Experience/Skills/Qualifications:

  • Registered Trademark Agent with CPATA with 3+ years of relevant trademark/intellectual property experience.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • A self-starter and team player with a professional manner.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines while balancing competing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • In-house experience is an asset.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
