About the unit
The 20 bed MICU treats severely ill patients using a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to care. Our patient population includes severe sepsis, acute respiratory failure, shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, multisystem organ failure, gastrointestinal bleeds, diabetic ketoacidosis, hypertensive crisis and acute/chronic renal failure. Our highly skilled nurses demonstrate critical thinking and physical assessment skills that set them apart from other teams as they manage this acutely ill patient population. Teamwork has long been the greatest strength in our MICU. Our nurses are successful because they have strong communication skills that enable them to collaborate with other health team members, can take ownership in shared decision-making, and develop a broad skill set to care for a wide range of patient diagnosis. Daily multi-disciplinary rounds allow the nurse to collaborate with Intensivists, fellows, residents, pharmacist, respiratory and social worker. Our orientation for new nurses joining our team includes 10–12-week orientation including a comprehensive Critical Care Course as needed. The MICU has active Professional Nurse Council and Scheduling Committees that meet monthly. Our commitment to learning, continuing education, and certification is part of our culture. If your career goal is to develop a broad range of critical care skills and knowledge, the Medical Intensive Care Unit provides an excellent foundation for learning in a collaborative team environment.
