Introduction to the job

As an R&D Export Control Architect (Software), you help protect cutting‑edge technology while enabling innovation. You embed export‑control requirements into software development from the start. Your work ensures that ASML advances semiconductor technology responsibly and in line with global regulations.

Role and responsibilities

You will define how export‑control requirements shape software engineering, data management, and delivery. You translate regulatory obligations into practical processes, controls, and design choices. You create the standards and guardrails that help teams move fast while staying compliant.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Translate export‑control regulations into process, data, and functional requirements.
  • Define end‑to‑end process architectures and capability maps for controlled technical data.
  • Set the target operating model and compliance‑by‑design standards for software initiatives.
  • Review solution proposals and challenge design choices to uphold control principles.
  • Guide secure code, build, test, and artifact management across repositories and pipelines.
  • Partner with software engineering to embed export‑control decisions into architecture.
  • Contribute to the export‑control framework with risk assessments and measurable controls.

Education and experience

  • Master’s degree in engineering, information management, business administration, compliance, or a related field.
  • At least five years in process design, information management, compliance, or business architecture.
  • Hands‑on experience translating regulations (such as U.S. EAR and EU Dual‑Use) into system and process requirements.
  • Background in complex software development environments or large engineering organizations.
  • Experience with development toolchains such as GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Jenkins, and Bamboo.
  • Familiarity with Agile ways of working is a plus.

Skills

Working at the cutting edge of tech, you’ll always have new challenges and new problems to solve – and working together is the only way to do that. You won’t work in a silo. Instead, you’ll be part of a creative, dynamic work environment where you’ll collaborate with supportive colleagues. There is always space for creative and unique points of view. You’ll have the flexibility and trust to choose how best to tackle tasks and solve problems.
To thrive in this job, you’ll need the following skills:

  • Structure complex topics and define clear, scalable frameworks.
  • Communicate with clarity across engineering, IT, legal, and compliance.
  • Model processes and data flows with accuracy and pragmatism.
  • Collaborate to build alignment and resolve trade‑offs.
  • Challenge assumptions constructively and guide decisions.
  • Apply identity and access management concepts (RBAC/ABAC) effectively.
  • Translate concepts into testable, auditable requirements.

Other information

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
