The Supplier Quality Manager provides strategic and tactical management support to the organization by overseeing the various Supplier Quality projects relating to APQP to support High Performance Product Development (HPPD) process, Supplier development activities, Corrective Actions, and reporting to maintain and improve customer satisfaction, eliminate errors and improve efficiency.  As a result, the Supplier Quality Manager is expected to be fully engaged with the global supply base to ensure that all direct purchased materials meet all performance specification requirements and do so over time to eliminate line downs, recalls, or other quality failures resulting in customer dissatisfaction.

Tactical Supplier Quality:  35%

Independently, and in collaboration with assigned suppliers within the global supply base, process and execute quality activities.  Maintain effective business communications/relationships with suppliers and internal customers to understand any quality impacts to production to proactively disseminate relevant information to all stakeholders and meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Serve as a consultative resource and collaborative partner to both customers and suppliers to ensure all needs and expectations are understood and addressed.
  • Coordination of new product introduction supplier quality activities including prioritization of work, supplier assessments/audits, PPAP, FMEA, etc.
  • Management of the containment and remediation process if supplier quality issues occur.
  • Review Corrective Action submissions to verify root cause analysis is complete and measures are taken to eliminate future reoccurrence, as needed.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely, accurate and consultative manner.
  • Support process audits, run at rates, and new supplier audits as required.

Supplier Relationship Management: 25%

Independently pilot the Supplier Quality Team in the quality aspects of Supplier Relationship Management by establishing and executing strategic quality strategies, fostering effective business communications/relationships with suppliers and effectively measuring supplier performance to encourage less variation in vital process inputs while supporting ongoing production to meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Rationalize the supply base to include family/supplier segmentation to understand the overall quality impact of suppliers while ensuring supplier quality development efforts are targeting those areas needing improvement.
    • Provide quality performance data as required to enable the assessment of past performance, ensure continued efficiency, and identify continuous improvement opportunities.
    • Identify “At-Risk” suppliers and employ quality strategies with them to prevent production of defective products.
  • Manage suppliers which includes:
    • A well-defined strategic supplier quality development process in conjunction with category and supplier plans
    • An effective supplier performance and review process
  • Manage the supplier relationship which includes:
    • Information sharing and transparency.
    • Trust building
    • Equitable joint efforts – collaboration and mutual trust
  • Develop Supplier Quality Engineer/Supplier understanding of SRM which includes:
    • Surveys to ID obstacles/barriers to performance
    • A commitment of resources on both sides to improve the relationship.
    • Continuous improvement efforts for both process and product applications
  • Measure and Manage Supplier Performance through the use of a balanced scorecard approach.

Project Management: 20%

Facilitate close communication regarding program/project tasks related to the Supplier Quality process and High-Performance Product Development (HPPD) requirements to all project members, identify opportunities or threats to project deliverables and coordinate Supplier Quality risk mitigation strategy and implementation plans. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships to include technical support that ensure proactive discussion and communication of emerging issues and current concerns occur across all project stakeholders.
  • Utilize various project management tools and templates to manage and communicate data related to supplier quality activities.

Leadership: 15%

Continuous Process Improvement: 5%

Independently and/or in collaboration with internal and external working partners, define, measure, analyze, improve, and control processes, programs and supplier performance to effectively, efficiently and proactively achieve strategic business initiatives and/or key performance indicators.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Manage projects necessary to execute continuous improvement plans in accordance with the category strategy

Experience / Professional Credentials:

  • 5 + years of experience in a Quality leadership role is required.
  • ASQ certification(s) are preferred (Manager, Auditor, Engineer, Black Belt)
  • Lean Six Sigma certification, strongly preferred.

Education Requirements:

  • BS/BA in Engineering or a related technical field is required.

Subject Matter Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of PPAP and FMEA activity for both current and new product launches
  • Experience with auditing & ISO 9001 Quality Systems
  • Advanced problem-solving skills & familiarity with DMAIC principles
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as casting, plastics, electrical, machining, assembly, and product testing

Business Travel Expectations

  • This position will require occasional day and/or overnight travel, up to 20%.
