Job Summary:

To provide area specific management of laboratory and pathology services. To ensure that quality operations are maintained that provide efficient, timely, and cost-effective laboratory services that support exceptional patient experiences. Accountable to laboratory administration, medical director, laboratory associates, and technical supervisors. This job profile may require call subject to the department's discretion.

Education & Experience

Meet minimum qualifications for a Surg Tech, Cytogenetic Technologist, Registered Medical Technologist, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnician, Histotechnologist or Mortician, plus two (2) years of experience in area to be managed.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration required:  American Association of Bioanalyst, MT (AAB); American Medical Technologist, MT (AMT); American Society for Clinical Pathology, MT (ASCP); American Society for Clinical Pathology, MLS (ASCP); National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel CLS (NCA); or equivalent categorical registration in medical technology such as RMT (ISCLT); American Society for Clinical Pathology, CT (ASCP); or American Society for Clinical Pathology, HT (ASCP), HLT (ASCP); American Society for Hisocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI), National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, CLSP (CG) (NCA). HHS (Health and Human Services-National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel; International Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of laboratory and experience with regulatory and accreditation of laboratory operations. Knowledge of management operations.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct technical support to lab operations and staff; assists in troubleshooting and offers consultation to employees, physicians and customers; assists in implementing effective quality improvement monitors that meet the area's needs. Monitors, reports, and improves key quality performance indicators. Seeks the assistance of the technical supervisor, manager, lab director, or medical director as needed.
  • Works with technical supervisor and/or manager to ensure regulatory and accreditation requirements are met.   Maintains records and documents for cap compliance.  Offers recommendations for deficiencies.  Serves as preceptor for competency assessments for new and tenured employees.
  • Enforces hospital and departmental policies and procedures.  Provides effective performance management of employees, offering input on performance evaluations and disciplinary counseling as requested. Recommends appropriate staffing; monitors productivity, training/development, and technical competency. Focuses on employee satisfaction and retention.
  • Performs tasks that are consistent with the strategies, goals, and budget such as inventory ordering and management, productivity monitoring and documentation, scheduling and assigning tasks to others.
  • Serves as a communication liaison between the laboratory administration and staff.
  • Promotes teamwork and customer service. Effectively communicates using appropriate verbal and written skills. Ensures that official communications are timely, complete, relevant, and appropriate in content and format.

Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, occasional handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals which mandate attention to safety considerations, frequent working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours, frequent travelling to offsite locations, frequent activities subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, constant work produced subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional driving, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, frequent sitting, constant standing, frequent twisting, and constant walking. (occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
