The opportunity:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Underwriter - Power to join the Markel team in our London office. Power is part of the Sustainable Energy and Power division, a subset of the Marine & Energy division of Markel International’s Wholesale book.  We have staff around the world with a significant presence in Asia and the US, in addition to the London market and can write business on both Company and Syndicate 3000 paper at Lloyd’s.

We work collaboratively both within Wholesale and across the wider Markel organisation, and because we work as one we are able to create the best solutions possible for our clients, and provide exceptional development opportunities for our staff.

Power sits alongside Renewable Energy in our Sustainable Energy and Power division. We setup our Power offering at the beginning of 2024, following feedback from our Major Trading Partners that to continue being a leading Insurer in the Sustainable Energy and Power space, we needed to offer the full suite of Insurance Products.

The Sustainable Energy and Power team is comprised of 7 underwriters, an engineer and a graduate, located across our London and Singapore offices. Our team’s primary expertise is withing the Renewable Energy space, therefore, we are recruiting for a dedicated, technical Power underwriter, who can complement our Renewables offering and support and direct our strategy for growth in Power. 

We are committed to technical underwriting and support our decision making with experienced engineering expertise. Our customers are the most valuable stakeholders in the value chain and we work closely with our claims team to deliver the best possible experience. A great emphasis is placed on long term partnerships with both brokers and assureds and we travel extensively to build and maintain distribution networks and client relationships across the Globe.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Work with your line manager and Divisional Director for Sustainable Energy and Power to develop and implement the underwriting strategy and business plan for the London market and other global hubs, building a long-term and profitable book of Power business

  • Develop strong relationships with new and existing brokers

  • Be active in marketing the Power product, including international travel and representing Markel as required in meetings, conferences and other such events

  • Demonstrate sound underwriting judgement whilst continuously scrutinizing performance against plan and adjusting approach as required

  • Apply appropriate risk management practices including aggregation management, governance controls and any measures required to monitor exposures within plan / agreed limits

  • Providing underwriting support to overseas offices and handling of referral approvals

  • Champion continuous development of associates to ensure all team members reach their potential

  • Monitor and report on portfolio performance

  • Seek and implement continuous improvements in end to end processes and data management

  • Prioritise customer experience with best in class response times to all stakeholders

Our must haves:

  • Have proven experience within the Power insurance market

  • Have a detailed understanding of the business line with a technical grasp of current risk factors and underwriting concerns, as well as an understanding of the global insurance marketplace

  • Demonstrate strong numerical and analytical ability

  • Have excellent communication skills

  • Have a network of London and international distribution channels

  • Demonstrate being an active member of a team and contribute in an open environment

  • Be enthusiastic, proactive, and someone who strives for excellence in everything they do
