Job Description:

Your Work Shapes the World at Caterpillar Inc.

When you join Caterpillar, you're joining a global team who cares not just about the work we do – but also about each other.  We are the makers, problem solvers, and future world builders who are creating stronger, more sustainable communities. We don't just talk about progress and innovation here – we make it happen, with our customers, where we work and live. Together, we are building a better world, so we can all enjoy living in it.

We are looking to hire an engineer to design components for integrating with other sub systems of Industrial Gas Turbines. The candidate should be able to design parts by collating ideas. The candidate must be willing to work on a wide variety of product development tasks such as design, simulation, instrumentation, testing, DFMEA, manufacturability, PPAP etc.

The job role includes (but not limited to) the below:

  • Design sub-systems and mechanical integration of Gas Turbines
  • Refine and improve product designs by conducting root-cause analyses and provide resolutions
  • Use geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) to determine tolerances of key components
  • Determine critical influencing parameters for design and manufacturability
  • Conduct design reviews for components/sub-systems
  • Own product development tasks such as supporting manufacturing, both traditional and experimental like Additive manufacturing.

This is a client-facing role and has a cross-functional responsibility (4-5 teams).

Education requirements:

  • B.E. / B. Tech.  in Mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited engineering college with 3+ years of product development experience
  • M.E. / M. Tech in Mechanical engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited engineering college with 2+ years of product development experience

Mandatory requirements are:

  • Strong in first principle thinking
  • Clarity of thought and good communication skills – should be able to explain & present his/her ideas
  • Experienced/conversant with fundamentals of structural design concepts: Stress/Strain, beam/shell theory, pressure vessel calculations, high/low cycle fatigue theories etc.
  • Ability to perform hand calculation verifications with sound mechanical design fundamentals.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in design of gas turbine external systems (i.e., secondary cooling system, lube oil system, bleed air systems, fuel systems, etc.)
  • Ability to evaluate gas turbine external systems to prove they meet manufacturing, assembly, durability and functional requirements.
  • Familiarity with conventional gas turbine components / systems, functionality as well as its manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Experience collaborating on cross-functional design teams, presenting on design reviews and documenting design per NPI (New Product Introduction) tollgate process.
  • Basic Creo / NX modeling capabilities (defeature / modify 3D models).
  • Ability interpreting and defining assembly / manufacturing dwgs following Geometrical Tolerancing standards.
  • Experience reviewing / approving drawings and Bill of Materials.

Preferred requirements are:

  • 10 years design experience of gas turbine external systems (i.e., secondary cooling system, lube oil system, bleed air systems, fuel systems, etc.)
  • Expertise in gas turbine external systems manufacturing, assembly processes and field issues resolution.
  • Exposure to gas turbine field serviceability (tooling and processes) and transportability (shipping, lifting, tooling, weight management, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable on gas turbine systems operability (start system, lube oil system, control system, etc.)
  • 5 years of experience in design and FEA structural analysis of components / systems.  (i.e., stress, deflection, modal, harmonic, elastic-plastic material properties, transients, contacts, etc.)
  • Exposure to development engine testing (defining instrumentation, supporting engine build and testing)
  • “Cradle to grave” component ownership of gas turbine components
  • FMEA, Risk Assessment and failure analysis expertise
