Job Summary:

To perform under supervision routine cytogenetic procedures for use in the diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases.

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology or Associate Degree in Chemical or Biological Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from accredited institution.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of human genetics, molecular biology, tissue culture, and basic hematology. Knowledge of specimen requirements, handling and culturing living cells, chromosome morphology, chromosome abnormalities, and methods of chromosome analysis. Ability to stock and maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and chemicals. Ability to follow laboratory procedures and comply with federal and state health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Receives, Logs, And Stores Specimens; Determines Appropriate Test Procedures And Billing Codes For Each Specimen In Accordance With Established Guidelines.
  • Initiates, Maintains, And Harvests Cell Cultures; Prepares And Stains Slides  For Microscopical Diagnosis  For Blood, Bone Marrow, Amniotic Fluids, Tumor, And Solid Tissues.
  • Performs Microscopical Analysis. Image Capturing, Karotype, And Prepares Reports Of Finding And Diagnosis On Each Specimen.
  • Makes Up And Prepares Tissue Culture Media, Reagents, Stocks And Work Solutions, Chemical And Staining Solution For Routine And Special Cytogenetic Studies. Maintains Supplies And Reagents. Responds To Equipment Maintenance And Daily Laboratory Cleaning.
  • Maintains Accurate Records Of Culture Processing, Specimen Labeling, Chromosomal Analysis, Patient Information, And Daily Equipment Performance.
  • Ensures Compliance With Federal And State Health And Safety Regulations And Participates In Ongoing Laboratory Qa, Qc, And Qm Programs.
  • Performs Other Duties As Assigned.

Requires no exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold, no handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment, constant working hours beyond regluarly scheduled  hours, no travelling to offsite locations, no activites subject to significant volume changes of a seasonal/clinical nature, no work produced is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality, constant bending, occasional lifting/carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional lifting/carrying up to 25 pounds, no lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds, no lifting/carrying up to 75 pounds, no lifting/carrying up to100 pounds, no lifing/carrying 100 pounds or more, no climbing, no crawling, no crouching/stooping, no driving, no kneeling,no pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting,frequent standing,frequent twisting, and occasional walking.  (Occasional-up to 20%, frequent-from 21% to 50%, constant-51% or more)
