Job Summary

The Citigroup Services Legal Department (Services Legal ) comprises over 110 FTE located across all time zones . Services Legal supports the Services Business . This is one of the 5 core business segments at Citi and it comprises Treasury & Trade Solutions and Securities Services . It is a business with an extensive client base of multinational corporations, financial institutions and public sector organisations and it is a truly global business with an extensive local presence.  

Services Legal is now is seeking a motivated and versatile individual to support the senior lawyer responsible for Client Solutions and Business Strategies and Initiatives  ( the “Legal BSI Head ”) and the introduction of this role presents a rare opportunity for a talented lawyer to support the Legal BSI Head in co-ordination , planning and oversight , both across the Services Legal team (per se) but also connecting that team with the Business in respect of its priorities, initiatives and challenges.

The role requires a person who has real aptitude as a strategist and facilitator in order to work on a broad range of matters  . The person will work hand in hand with the Legal BSI Head in responding to Business initiatives : these will vary in complexity and scope and , whilst a major focus of the role will be business facing  it will also work on the priorities  of  Services Legal as it operates as a department ,especially in connection with the consolidation of  knowledge, development of training, precedents and best practices and  , finally , the use of new technologies to simplify the team`s operating model  . In addition , the role will  develop a close collaboration with the wider Citi Legal Department (especially the other Legal department Business Strategies and Initiatives Leads , Global Legal Solutions and the Regulatory Advisory Team ) .

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding across all the elements of Cash, Trade and Securities Services and will understand the risks and controls those Businesses need to manage , both as a whole , but also on a cluster by cluster basis as this is reflective of the nature of a business which operates in over 100 countries , processing payments, clearing and settlement of trillions of assets each day .


What you’ll do:

Services Legal BSI is new function . It is designed to identify and deal with sets of common themes , specifically across a Services business which itself is in the process of refresh , consolidation and harmonisation .

Within the BSI “zone” , the successful candidate will develop a strong understanding of the strategic direction and priorities of the Services Business. Key elements include : a relentless focus on the global client experience and how to deliver a diverse range of Services products across a broad span of geographical borders  ;  Business  data , automation and digital strategies ; and best practices  in Business risk and controls , governance , escalation and decision making ; and the regulatory change environment which impacts Services . At the same time , the candidate will  translate those priorities into a Services Legal common approach to advising Business on legal risk. Finally the candidate work closely with other areas within GLAC to ensure that the Services Legal operating model is clearly articulated and consistently applied.   

Services Legal BSI has 3 essential components :

  • “Client Solutions” i.e. developing common ground and best practices across our documentation and memorialising the legal principles underpinning these .
  • All Services” Digital initiatives – which would include giving legal advice to any of the Cash, Trade or Securities Services Businesses where the subject matter involves digital assets , blockchain , tokenisation, working with technology companies and strategic investment partners , but also might include improvements to Services Legal`s own processes particularly with regard to matters which could be enhanced through technology solutions .
  • “Pure” BSI  (the subject of this role) . This will be made up of several distinct areas of expertise , all designed to connect the Services Business with its lawyers.

By way of example this will include :

  • identifying and maintaining analyses of the laws and regulations which prevail across all Services Businesses and which have the most important impact on how the Services Business operates from the perspective of its financial, competitive , operational and reputational positioning . This will include  facilitating a common understanding  with our Business colleagues ; advocacy and participation in industry groups and finally client education on impact for them .
  • understanding and advising on the risks, controls and policies of the Services Business and advising on legal entity usage/booking ,good governance and decision making, The role will support both the Services Business and Services Legal in the execution and oversight of enterprise escalation control standards, frameworks, MCAs , reporting, tools, and escalation oversight.

What we’ll need from you:

  • have an active involvement in and oversight of departmental program management and strategic initiatives ;
  • have an ability to design and implement various regulatory, control and governance driven initiatives and business change projects, including working on developing appropriate policies, as well as managing procedures and controls;
  • work hand in hand with and give direct support to the Services Legal BSI Head , but also active liaison with the Services Legal Senior Management Team ; and
  • work with colleagues in the wider Legal Department to identify and efficiently resolve organizational issues and areas of improvement , particularly matters which could be enhanced through legal technology

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent experience
