At Walt Disney Animation Studios we have a deep commitment to the philosophy that creativity inspires technology, and technology inspires creativity. Engineers in our Production Technology department are charged with developing and implementing new algorithms to solve unique and challenging problems for all of our animated content. We do this working alongside a user base that shares a collaborative environment with us and uses the code we develop to make our feature films.
We are seeking a 3rd or 4th-year student. The role will ideally be onsite, however there is potential for hybrid.
Character Performance & Authoring is a team that develops and supports workflows across a number of artistic departments dealing with the construction, editing, manipulation, and animation of our character assets. We help bring life to the characters you see on screen. We work with our users to understand their needs and then develop tools to help make their lives easier and make them more productive. We are looking for an intern to partner with engineers and artists to explore using machine learning-driven asset searching in our animation workflows. Projects include: ● Working closely with artists and technical team members to understand workflows and propose solutions to explore ● Tackling technical challenges ● Research and investigate new ideas, building prototypes and validating results ● Design, implement, and test a machine learning model for asset searching ● Execute experiments to determine the models ability to fulfill research objectives ● Document code and reporting findings of the project for future reference
Qualifications
● In the process of completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, related field or equivalent
● The ability to quickly produce clear, testable code
● Experience with modern C++ and scripting languages including Python
● Has foundational knowledge in machine learning and computer vision
● Curious in approach, with strong problem solving skills
● Ability to work in a collaborative environment, receive mentorship, and take direction from department and show leadership
● Passion for computer graphics, animation & algorithms
Bonus Qualifications:
● Experience or relevant coursework in Computer Graphics
● Proficiency or experience with designing user interfaces
● Familiarity with UI frameworks like Qt
● Experience with animation workflows and tools
● Experience working with large-scale image datasets and annotation tools
Program Details:
● Location: Vancouver, BC
● Program Length: May - August
● Eligibility: Must be at least 18 years old and enrolled in an accredited college/university during the semester prior to the internship.
● Must possess unrestricted work authorization and provide full availability for the entire program duration.
