Join us as a Public Policy Unit Senior Manager

  • We're looking for a motivated and pragmatic Public Policy professional to work in our newly formed Policy Unit and develop and promote our interests to political and other relevant stakeholders, including customers
  • Working closely with Public Affairs, Corporate Affairs, the franchises, our customers, and other relevant stakeholders, you’ll ensure policy work underpins bank-wide campaigns
  • This is a perfect opportunity to use your policy knowledge, insight, and contacts to develop ideas and proposals to underpin campaigning activity on issues of strategic importance to us and our customers

What you'll do

In this pivotal position, you’ll use and broaden your network to develop and implement policy proposals with senior stakeholders in the bank, politicians, customers, and other interested parties. You’ll develop policies of strategic importance to the bank, interpreting and understanding data to create compelling arguments and ideas that will underpin campaigns.

Working closely with the wider Public Policy team, you ensure a consistent approach to issues management and external engagement. You’ll also develop policy ideas of strategic importance to the bank that can be implemented by local and national governments, with a particular focus on growth.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Protecting and enhancing our reputation with political stakeholders
  • Understanding and interpreting data to underpin evidence-based policies, ensuring development is credible and workable
  • Distributing well-structured information to relevant internal stakeholders in a timely manner
  • Working with UK industry working groups and associations to make sure they are aware of our position and can influence policy to that effect
  • Representing the bank at external UK trade associations and consumer policy committees and events

The skills you'll need

We're looking for someone with a strong history of working with or within government, Westminster, or any of the devolved legislatures, with a well-developed understanding of the UK and devolved legislative processes, political processes, and public policy formation. You’ll be engaging with high profile stakeholders, so you’ll need the ability to network and influence effectively.

You’ll have experience of working in a public policy setting including government, in-house, agency or political environments. Along with experience of managing public policy risks and issues and providing strategic counsel to internal colleagues, you’ll have a broad understanding of the nuanced political environment across the UK. Experience working in financial services is desirable.

In addition to this, you’ll demonstrate:

  • A broad understanding of financial and economic trends and issues, with the ability to communicate complex information to non-specialist audiences
  • Excellent and nuanced communication and research skills, with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support wider campaigns
  • The discretion to deal prudently with some high profile and sensitive subjects
  • A proven track record of planning, managing conflicting priorities, and engaging key stakeholders in a timely fashion
  • A strong contacts book, especially in government, and an intimate understanding of how government works
