Job Description:

Responsibilities

The Senior Health Program Coordinator will work within the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities Prevention (OMH-HDP). The incumbent will contribute to the planning, coordination, and implementation of activities that promote health equity for racial and ethnic minorities in New York State as well as support populations with limited English proficiency, low health literacy, and/or those whose needs for culturally competent care are not being met. 

The incumbent will also contribute toward activities that improve the understanding of health disparities among rural populations and LGBTQ+ populations, with a focus on minority areas, and will assist with raising awareness, increasing engagement, and aiding in efforts to address such disparities among these populations.

  • Responsibilities include and are not limited to: maintaining, developing, and expanding relationships with stakeholders; conducting listening sessions with communities, making presentations, and/or providing technical assistance and training to internal and external stakeholders with respect to the underlying causes of and potential solutions to health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities, and rural and LGBTQ communities in New York State;
     
  • In the area of health literacy, provide training, contribute to developing guidance, contribute to convening and facilitating a DOH health literacy committee, and serving as a health literacy resource for OMH-HDP, NYS DOH, and the communities we serve.
     
  • Help to support language access needs across DOH, and support efforts such as educating communities about their right to language services in health care.

COVID-19 highlighted long-standing inequities that have systematically undermined the physical, social, economic, and emotional health of marginalized populations, including racial and ethnic minority populations, people living with disabilities, older adults, rural residents, and lower-income communities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of experience contributing to the coordination of program activities in a public health, health, health regulatory, or human services related program; OR an Associate's degree in a related field and four years of such experience; OR six years of such experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field. Experience working with marginalized communities, particularly communities of color and/or foreign-born populations, rural communities, and/or LGBTQ+ communities.  Work experience addressing health disparities. Experience addressing or expertise in plain language, health literacy, and/or language access.   Experience in community outreach and engagement.  Experience preparing and providing presentations to and for diverse audiences.  Demonstrated proficiency using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Zoom, Webex, and Microsoft Teams. 

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Travel, up to 25% of the time, will be required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will be available.
