 Medtronic’s Diabetes campus in Northridge, CA is looking for a Technician II to join our Mechanical R&D team.  As a member of the R&D Mechanical group the individual selected for this role will assist in the design, testing and development of diabetes related products such as insulin pumps, glucose sensors, and related accessories.  This technician will support full life cycle of the product from engineering phase to manufacturing transfer and sustaining support.

The person filling this role will become part of a dynamic and fast-paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product development. They will have the opportunity to interface with Mechanical engineers, as well as various functional groups within the Diabetes Business Unit. We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Technician to support mechanical assembly processes for medical devices. This role emphasizes hands-on assembly line work including being familiar with adhesive dispensing, thermal presses, laser marking, programming, and inspections. Additional responsibilities include overseeing build requests, inventory tracking, and additional operator training.

The ideal candidate is organized, communicative, and comfortable partnering with engineers to plan, execute, and improve assembly processes. This role requires balancing precision with throughput in a fast-paced environment, ensuring both product quality and team success. Responsibilities include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead execution of engineering builds from start to finish, including assembly setup and line management, utilizing a variety of techniques and equipment (adhesive dispensing, thermal presses, laser marking, programming tools, and inspection equipment).
  • Operate as a lead on the assembly floor: coordinating daily activities and ensuring smooth throughput.
  • Partner with engineers to plan builds, resolve issues, and provide feedback on design for manufacturability and process improvements.
  • Train and mentor operators and technicians on proper assembly methods, equipment usage, and quality standards.
  • Manage parts inventory for assigned builds: track material usage, organize stock, and proactively communicate inventory shortages.
  • Maintain lab spaces and equipment, ensuring readiness, calibration, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Support multiple product and projects simultaneously, adapting to shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Document test results, assembly methods, and process updates with accuracy and clarity.

Must Have – Minimum Requirements 

  • High School Diploma or GED 
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience and may require vocational or technical education and advanced certification in addition to prior work experience 

Nice to Have 

  • Hands-on experience with mechanical assemblies in a production or development environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead assembly processes, manage builds, and train/coordinate team members.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to multitask across projects.
  • Effective communicator—able to partner across functions (engineering, operations, quality) and give clear direction to operators.
  • Familiarity with assembly equipment such as adhesive dispensers, thermal presses, laser markers, and inspection tools.
  • Experience with inventory management systems and build documentation.
  • Problem-solving mindset, comfortable working under limited supervision in a fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline 
  • Demonstrated mechanical testing for electromechanical devices 
  • Demonstrated written and communication skills 
  • Willingness to learn and grow skills 
  • Ability to work in matrix organization, build and leverage network to solve problems 
  • Experience working medical device or regulated industry

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$50,400.00 - $75,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
