Job Summary

Performs quality routine and IHC histological responsibilities.

                         

Job Details

Responsibilities:

  • Accurately identifies each patient specimen and accurately accessions into the pathology Information system.
  • Reports pertinent information to histology supervisor and team (e.g., instrument malfunctions, delay in testing and reagent or supply depletion.
  • Dates opened and expiration dates in reagents, controls etc. and uses reagents and controls only until their expiration date.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work areas and keeps work areas Organizational and stocked.
  • Follows procedures and refers to procedure manuals for proper instructions.
  • Proficiently operates the cryostat and other equipment and follows troubleshooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems as they occur.
  • Ensures instrument operations and results are reliable and performs maintenance checks, start ups and shut downs as assigned or required.
  • Ensures controls are within acceptable limits before patient results are reported.
  • Documents quality control and out of range results in an appropriate manner.
  • Competent to work independently on weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Currently licensed in the State of Florida at the Histology Technologist level.
  • ASCP licensing preferred.

Certifications:

  • Currently licensed in the State of Florida at the Histology Technologist (HTL) level.
  • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) licensing preferred.

Work Experience:

  • One year hospital clinical experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Essential Duties: This position requires knowledge of various aspects of patient care.
  • Must possess good organizational skills to balance clerical and clinical duties.
  • Work is heavy, constant lifting and moving patients, carrying equipment, supplies and material up to 50 pounds without help and over 50 pounds with the help of mechanical devices or other personnel.
  • Stooping, pushing, and pulling when moving patient or equipment into position for treatment.
  • Reaching for, handling, feeling and manipulation of equipment in position.
  • Physical Duties: This position requires frequent walking, sitting, and standing.
  • Frequent talking and listening when giving instructions and explanations. Frequent use of the phone, fax machines, and occasional to frequent use of the computer.
  • Working Conditions: The majority of time the employee spends indoors in air-conditioned areas.
  • Potential for exposure to blood and blood borne pathogens is significant.
  • Clinical exposure to patients requires the use of personal protective equipment.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • This position requires high exposure to infectious wastes such as blood and bodily fluids that mandates the wearing of gloves, masks, gowns, and goggles as appropriate.
  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
