Job Description:

The Nebraska Workers’ Compensation Court is looking for a highly responsible and detail-oriented person to provide direct judicial support to Judges of the Nebraska Workers' Compensation Court. We offer a unique experience where the legal, insurance, and medical industries intersect. An experience that cannot be found in other areas of the Nebraska judicial system.
- Transcribe and/or draft decisions, orders, correspondence, and other legal materials. Proofread, edit, and cite check documents for accuracy. Verify and organize exhibits from hearings and trials, including scanning exhibits into the court’s computerized information systems when necessary.
- Closely monitor court filings and documents received via eFiling. Examine contents for consistency with statutory and procedural requirements.
- Assemble materials to create new docket folders for motions. Distribute appropriate documents to the parties involved.
- Process new coverage enforcement motions from the Attorney General’s office. Prepare summons and serve appropriate parties via certified mail, sheriff, or other delivery methods allowed by statute.
- Schedule motions, conferences, and trials for the assigned judges. Assist in coordinating video hearings or trials when necessary.
- Process motions and prepare orders for the assigned judges and decisions for all judges.
- Schedule court rooms, court reporters, interpreters, and overnight travel arrangements for the assigned judges. Work with Douglas County or District Court Administrator’s Office to schedule additional court rooms in Omaha when necessary.
- Organize court rooms before and after hearings, including testing of courtroom technology equipment. Clean and/or sanitize as necessary.
- Provide technical support to users of the courtroom technology equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of filings and legal actions on forms and in the computer system.
- Maintain calendars for the assigned judges and review for scheduling conflicts.
- Greet and direct visitors. Screen and transfer telephone calls for the judges.
- Perform various secretarial duties, including but not limited to, opening and distributing mail and preparing correspondence and other materials as required.
- Maintain the flow of files and information with the main office in Lincoln using e-mail, shared directories, and databases on a computer network.
- Verify accuracy of decisions and orders to be published on a daily basis.
- Work in cooperation with the other judicial assistants and judicial coordinator, which includes providing support and backup, to effectively manage the workflow of all judges.
- Monitor operation of Omaha office computers, printers, and computer network, and report problems to computer services personnel.
- Disseminate directives regarding parking, security, repairs, cleaning, etc. from Douglas County Building Commissioner, implement and coordinate the same.
- As workload permits, review closed cases and determine which cases are ready for permanent retention in accordance with the court’s Record Retention Schedule. Review filings and documents for completeness. Purge qualified docket records and scan pleadings, exhibits, and other documents for permanent retention.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Completion of legal/paralegal course work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to enable the individual to perform the duties of the position and meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Previous court or legal assistant experience preferred. Transcription experience preferred.
Other: Ability to type accurately, minimum 65 wpm. Applicants selected for an interview will be required to complete a typing test.

- Ability to proofread and cite check legal materials.
- Ability to draft decisions, orders, correspondence, and other legal materials.
