General Area of Responsibility:
1. The 2nd Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer.
2. In case of emergency and the Chief Engineer is not available the 2nd Engineer takes over the Chief Engineers responsibility as above but
also according to Emergency Response Manual
3. To perform operational duties as requested by the Chief Engineer, related to all tasks of the vessel including Salvage operations
4. To carry out maintenance duties on deck, in the engine room or accommodation in a safe manner
5. Ensure the Planned Maintenance System is kept updated and is followed
6. Comply with the regulations of the company safety management system. including a general awareness of the various risks that are
present in the operations of a tug (OH&S, environment, security and cyber security risks).
7. Propose initiatives for raising the onboard safety level
8. Active participation in safety training like drills onboard including delivering training to other crew members
9. Comply with local, regional, national and international legislation.
10. Induction training of visitors, employees and other persons authorized by SVITZER to access the vessel where a Master, Deck Officer or
Chief Engineer is unavailable.
Specific Area of Responsibility:
Second engineer is responsible for the below with the guidance / instructions from the Chief Engineer
1. Maintain engine room watch keeping
2. Immediate reporting of equipment defects and deficiencies to chief engineer
3. Engine room safety
4. Maintenance of all machinery on board (ref. Sertica)
5. Pollution prevention from machinery spaces
6. Proper instruction of new engine personnel and ratings regarding their tasks
7. Engines cooling water chemical test and treatment
8. Maintenance of fire fighting and environment protection equipment
9. Daily inspection of equipment and material
10. The prescribed tests of emergency stops and quick releases
11. Housekeeping in the machinery spaces
12. The correct keeping of Engine Logbook and Records
13. Promoting safety awareness and initiatives to enhance safety on board
14. Test of emergency functions at regular intervals not exceeding three months
15. Safe bunkering of the ship including disposal of oily water and used oil products
16. Pro-active participation in HMS
Required/Preferred Education and competencies:
• Valid Seafarer Medical Certificate
• Valid Seaman Book
• Valid COC endorsement
Possession of STCW Certification (A-III/2)
Advanced Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/3)
Advanced Personal Survival, Search and Rescue (STCW A-VI/1-1.1)
Proficiency Survival Craft and Rescue Boat (STCW A-VI/2)
Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (STCW A-VI/1-4)
Basic Safety Training (STCW A-VI/1 Manila)
Ship Security Awareness (STCW A VI/6)
Prevention and Combating of Marine Pollution
Medical First Aid (STCW A-VI/4-1)
