Job Summary:
Assess patient status and perform clinical apheresis procedure to remove and replace blood for collection or disease prevention purposes. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform all phases of therapeutic apheresis procedures (plasma exchange, red cell exchange, platelet and white cell reduction, photo pheresis and hematopoietic progenitor cell collection), to ensure safe and appropriate care of patient and explaining, as needed, the procedures to patients and their family and other attending healthcare professionals.
2. Assess patient status relative to therapeutic apheresis, prior and during procedures, utilizing nursing process, laboratory testing results and other clinically significant procedures.
3. Coordinate closely with physicians and nurses at a variety of hospitals to arrange therapeutic apheresis treatments and facilitate coordinated care.
4. Evaluate patient medication for compatibility and safety of apheresis procedure and determine when to contact the physician.
5. Assemble, restock, QC and maintain supplies and equipment in a state of readiness to maintain a clean, safe and efficient work environment.
6. May operate American Red Cross vehicle.
Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor’s degree and current state licensure as Registered Nurse and CPR certification required.
Experience: Minimum 2 years of medical/surgical or critical care nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required. Previous apheresis or dialysis experience is preferred.
Management Experience: N/A
Skills & Abilities: Good vein selection and venipuncture skills are essential. Good verbal communication and customer service skills and the ability to effectively discuss procedures and medical issues with patients, families, and physicians. A current valid driver's license and good driving record are required. Must work independently and have strong attention to detail. Ability to work on a team.
Travel: Some travel may be required.
*Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
